Mil-Spec Automotive has revealed their fourth version of the Launch Edition H1 revival, and its ready for the Baja.
We might have talked about Mil-Spec Automotive a few times before as makers of delightfully rebuilt and customized Hummer H1s. The Detroit-based boutique carmaker specializes in taking old, run-down, and retired Hummers and turning them into bespoke luxury off-road vehicles that any well-to-do apocalypse survivor would be all too happy to own.
Mil-Spec will be making 12 of their unique creations for the 2018-2019 production period, having just revealed their fourth offering to the discerning consumer. And it’s a true desert comber of a car.
Launch Edition #004 has been built specifically with combing the Baja California Desert in mind. It’s matte tan paint job blends in perfectly with the Baja’s sunbleached sands, while the interior of black leather and analog instruments the #004 an air of sophistication--like it’s something you’d take on safari.
Black leather in the desert isn’t exactly the best choice, but Mil-Spec assumes that a Launch Edition owner always wear pants.
In addition to the desert decor, the #004 comes equipped some off-road goodies. A set of 40-inch off-road tires and a body that’s 7-inches wider than normal give the #004 a presence that’s hard to ignore. It also sports steel-tube front and rear bumpers, a spare tire rack, a brush guard, LED roof lights, a snorkel, and a remote-controlled winch capable of hauling 12,000 lbs.
Like all Launch Editions, #004 comes with a 6.6-L turbodiesel V8 under the hood which puts out 500 hp and 1,000 lb-ft of torque. Zero to sixty is done in 6 seconds, with a max payload of 2,802 lbs and a max towing of 9,300 lbs.
However, all this capability doesn’t come cheap. A regular Launch Edition starts at $218,499, but the #004 starts at $250,478. It could get even more expensive with a few additional options that don’t come standard on the #004, but after spending a quarter of a million bucks, what’s another few thousand on bigger cup holders?
