As far as JDM cars go, the Mitsubishi EVO is one of the more iconic cars to come from Japan in the last few decades. The EVO X seemed to be slightly overlooked and perhaps this was due to the changes from the previous models. This list will contain some points which people may have forgotten about the EVO X as it is still certainly a relevant car even in today's market.

10 Interesting Features

One of the more interesting features of the EVO X is its lack of a reverse gear. This was a weight-saving measure from Mitsubishi. In order to reverse the car, the first and third gears engage with an idler gear on a separate shaft in order to reverse the direction of rotation.

Another interesting feature of the EVO is the windows, which are made of a type of energy-saving glass. They reduce solar heat transmission by around two-thirds, this improves energy usage as having a cooler interior means less energy is needed for the AC on warmer days.

9 Multiple Variants

The EVO's from the past have always had multiple versions and the EVO X is no exception. Variants of the EVO X depend on the country with the most notable differences being power output and transmission types.

For example, the UK had the FQ-440 MR. This was released in 2014 as a special edition with a 440hp inline-4 engine. It was also available with a 6-speed transmission and the exclusive Frost White color. Only 40 units of this model variant were produced. By comparison, the US had the Final Edition released in 2015 with 18" Enkei dark alloy wheels and 303hp. It even included a final edition badge.

It's no secret that there is some rally heritage with the EVO. The EVOs that have come before have been successful, and rally versions of the EVO X have also been used in professional championships.

In 1996, the Mitsubishi won its first World Rally Championship drivers’ title with driver Tommi Makinen. He then went on to win four consecutive drivers’ titles with the EVO between 1996-1999. In 1999, Mitsubishi created a special edition Evo VI to celebrate Makinen's wins.

6 F1 Connection

Although the EVO is mainly known as a road-going rally car, it is also as comfortable on a track as it is on a dirt road. It's well documented how well the EVO X handles. This is partly down to its impressive suspension and chassis not to mention it being 4WD.

However, it's perhaps slightly less well known that there is a connection to Formula 1 with the EVO X. F1 Floating Piston Technology is used making the engine 12KG lighter than the previous 2.0-liter unit. These floating pistons are created by Mahle and are used in F1 cars.

5 Moving Lights

Some people may have forgotten about one of the surprising additions to the lights on the EVO X. They had a feature that could be useful to those driving at night and at the time was quite innovative.

The Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) uses a high-intensity discharge (HID) which increases the field of vision for the driver to make night driving safer. The car even detects when the driver turns the wheel and automatically switches an additional beam on to light up the oncoming corner.

4 Easily Modified

Given that the EVO X looks much more sedan-like than the EVO's that came before, it may be hard to believe that the EVO X is very easily modified.

Parts for the EVO are very widely available and one area of the car that is often modified is the engine. The 4B11T engine in the Evo X is easily tuned. Some of the higher-powered models have a lot of tuning upgrades fitted, but on the lower models a remap can gain you around 50bhp. An FQ300 for example however can produce 375bhp with a full exhaust, induction kit, and a remap.

3 New Look

It's easy to tell immediately that the EVO X looks nothing like it's predecessors. It's more rounded design gives it a much more understated look when compared to past models.

The previous EVO's had a much boxier shape and this newer design makes the EVO X look much more modern than the EVO's from previous years. Some could argue that this look makes the EVO X look softer and less aggressive, but it still an EVO all the same from a technical standpoint at least.

2 Built for Handling

As touched on earlier, the EVOs definitely have the power, however, they don't exist purely for straight-line speed but rather to handle well when cornering. The engineering of the EVO is remarkable in typical Japanese fashion and this helps the EVO go up against cars even twice its price.

Its use of an electronic system named S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) gives the EVO X an active yaw control as well as an active center diff, stability control system, and ABS. The track width of the EVO X was also increased slightly by 30mm from the previous EVO IX helping it handle even better than the already impressive past EVO's.

1 Removal of Features

One negative feature that people may not be aware of when remembering the EVO X is how Mitsubishi decided to remove something from the 2015 EVO which was available on earlier editions.

The 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution isn't equipped with Recaro performance seats. Instead, it has the standard Lancer seats and the reason for this is due to an airbag requirement in the newer model. These seats were not well received by owners of the EVO and some people actually opt for the 2014 EVO X for this reason.
