Modified 4x4s and trucks are widely popular in the US for many reasons. Not only have they created their own subculture but they’ve made it into some of the biggest shows in the world such as SEMA. Some of these trucks are quite extensive from a build standpoint, making them works of art.

However, they don't always make sense. There are modified trucks that don’t do justice to the trucks they once were. Even though this culture of modified 4x4s has become increasingly popular, every new thing isn’t without its flaws.

Today we are going look at some of the best builds along with others that make zero sense. These are trucks that range from clean builds to off the wall custom work. There are even some racing trucks added in that fall in both categories.

From the trucks that completely blow our mind and are tastefully done, to those which make zero sense, today we're going over 13 of the best-modified 4x4s and 12 that make no sense at all. By the end, we'll be able to see the best of both worlds while also respecting the builds and owners' taste in modifications for their trucks.

To start off, we'll go through 11 of the best-modified trucks as well as 13 that make no sense at all.

24 Ford Ranger

Via Pinterest

It is still very rare to see a new Ford Ranger, let alone a modified one. This one was done by SMC, and it turned out extremely tasteful. The rarity of finding a truck like this increased its chances of being included in our list of the best-modified trucks.

However, with a more aggressive wheel and tire setup, light bars and other subtle changes to the truck, it actually looks extremely presentable with this dark blue factory paint color. Now, to get into 12 modified trucks that make no sense.

23 The Flip Truck

Via AutoSledge

This truck is one of the worst ones that has ever been modified. Sure, rolling around in a truck might be fun, but what is the real point of it? They actually modified this truck to roll when you stop.

It makes for good entertainment when someone makes something like this, but when it comes to the actual functionality of the truck, this doesn’t make any sense at all.

22 The Velociraptor

Via Off-road.com

We talked about the Raptor slightly earlier, but this thing is something completely on another level. This is the Velociraptor as deemed by Hennessy Performance. This truck is essentially a modified Raptor that has an extra axle and two wheels with tires mounted on.

There was really no purpose to this truck, other than being able to do it. As we spoke about earlier, the Raptor already started out great, and this made no sense ruining it.

21 The Upside Down Truck

Via YouTube

Is this actually flipped? Oh wait, this truck was purposely built by the owner to be well, an upside-down truck. This is an older Chevy truck that the owner modified to appear upside down when it's actually right-side up.

Talk about something that doesn’t make any sense. Is it unique? Yes. Has someone else done it? No. Does that take away from the fact that it's really not even a truck anymore?

20 Turbo Diesel Rat Rod

Via Pinterest

Generally, people think rat rods are pretty cool. Well, this truck isn’t quite on that level. Sure, it's something that's unique and possibly quick. The truck is so low, however, it has no bed and, well, isn't functional. This modification makes no sense.

A rat rod is always something unique to see, however just because they are unique doesn’t mean they completely make sense to everyone.

19 Rear Engine Chopped Rat Rod

Via AutoNXT

Even from the picture, you can already see how this truck doesn’t make much sense. While this is a powerful truck that was built to go fast and is unique, it doesn’t mean that it is practical or logical to build.

This one isn’t just a rat rod style build, but a rear engine one. That means you are already losing the truck aspect of it and you are changing the balance completely by chopping the bed even more, making the wheelbase shorter.

18 Gold Denali

Via Pinterest

In the eyes of many, this as a pretty cool truck. However, this gold Denali is something other than that. Yes, it is flashy to have a paint job that no one else has, even if it is vinyl wrapped.

Being able to maintain paint like this is an absolute nightmare. Fortunately, this truck was only built for SEMA and nothing else. But the concept is still skewed as to why the gold would be a good idea on this truck.

17 Diesel Trucks Rolling Coal

Via Truck Trend

This is something that you’ve been able to see in nearly every modified diesel around the states. That signature black smoke coming from the exhaust is something that's seemingly required if you own and drive a diesel truck.

However, this is one thing that completely doesn’t make sense. Making a ton of smoke isn’t something that's cool, in fact, it's destroying the environment more than a diesel truck already does. However, this is still to the liking of many people.

16 Mid Engine Drag Truck

Via Legendary Finds

Where we’ve seen some bizarre trucks on this list so far, this one is by far the wildest. This is actually a mid-engine drag racing truck. The owners actually made this to race on the drag strip.

Where the number of hours that went into even building the chassis is astronomical, this is a modification we can’t justify doing to any truck. Even with this truck, the bed was stretched to make it more balanced when they were launching and to help with fitting the drivetrain.

15 Trax Raptor

Via Motor1

We all know and love Ken Block, however, this is one of his trucks that makes no sense at all. Where the trax Raptor is something that was the first in the world for a number of years, it isn’t practical for anything but snow.

So Ken himself isn’t able to drive the truck unless its snowing or has snowed outside his home in Utah. The build is wild just like most of his cars that have been built, but still doesn’t make sense for anyone but Ken Block himself.

14 Camper Truck

Via Popular Mechanics

On the surface, this seems like something that makes sense for the practicality of the build. However, the camper truck isn’t necessarily something that makes sense overall. Yes, you can actually have a regular sized truck that's also a camper, but you also can buy an actual camper for the same price as this modification.

Fortunately, this isn’t something that's overwhelmingly popular among the community of modifying trucks; it is something we came across that didn’t make sense from the modification sense.

13 Bagged Flatbed

Via Car and Driver

We touched on the Baller Hauler earlier, which was one of the best builds to have come out of the car and truck community. However, this bagged 40s flatbed is something that's on another level.

You might think this is actually a clean build, but the nature of taking something that is vintage, classic and turning it into something mainstream by bagging it seems not to pay it any justice at all.

12 Plow Truck

Via Pinterest

Rounding off the list is a vehicle we’ve definitely never seen before and don’t know the actual function of. This truck is equipped with a sort of plow that isn’t quite useful for snow. It actually looks like something straight out of a Mad Max film.

Function aside, this plow is pure steel adding easily a few thousand pounds to the entire weight of the truck, which raises the question: what is the actual purpose of adding this type of plow bumper piece in the first place?

11 Dodge Ram 2500

Via Dieselsellerz

This Dodge Ram isn’t one you would normally see on the streets. This is indeed a Cummins diesel 2500 of the era. With the most tasteful mods that you can possibly do for this truck, from a light lift to the black accents, each modification compliments each other.

Not only that, but the aggressive front grille and bumper paired with the black wheels give this truck a true look that definitely makes heads turn.

10 Road Racing Truck

Via Pinterest

Something you don’t see very often is a truck that is completely outfitted for road racing. This truck is completely road race ready with its lowered suspension, active aerodynamics, custom fenders and more. Rumor has it there may even be a new racing series hitting the circuit as well.

The color pairing alone with natural body lines give this truck that aggressive stance and mean look that you are looking for while racing.

9 Diesel Brother's Denali

Via Dieselsellerz

The Diesel Brothers are one of those shops known for building some really cool trucks. This one is no different. Paired with the black on black color combination, this truck looks SEMA ready while also being able to actually hit the trails.

This Denali is one that you can’t find anywhere else, especially that's tastefully done. This is extremely important when modifying any vehicle, especially a truck. Subtle grey accents give a slight pop of color, making this a truly awesome truck.

8 Baja Nissan Titan

Via Pinterest

The Nissan Titan is a truck still accepted by the general truck community as a contender. This Titan is sure to change your mind if you don't already like this body style. This truck is actually Baja ready, with functional suspension, widened front and rear fenders and more.

This is a truck you can take on the trails, to the desert and pretty much take on anything you throw at it. A classic black with red accents combination makes this a work of art instead of a mere truck.

7 Datsun GTR Truck

Via Pinterest

This truck isn’t something that you see very often. It's actually a Datsun truck with a GTR swapped front end, thus effectively making it a Datsun GTR truck. Not only has a ton of work gone into making this build clean, but it still functions as a truck.

The owner, however, tends to actually use it for racing on the circuit instead of hauling since it actually handles very well and is lightweight.

6 Mini Cooper Truck

Via Pinterest

Another truck you might not see anywhere else is this Mini Cooper Pickup. This one is another custom build that's taken a regular Mini Cooper and essentially transformed it into a Mini truck.

Similar to the Datsun GTR truck, this one isn’t used so much for hauling heavy things or a trailer around--it's used for racing. Since this is a unique build, you can’t really find this anywhere else, hence why it's natural to make our list.

5 Ring Brother's F-100

Via Ringbrothers

The Ring Brother’s F-100 is a truck that's easily worthy of making our list. This truck not only combines classic elements of a hot rod but also gives it a familiar look the Ring Brother’s finish with all their projects.

With a mean stance and lowered suspension, the F-100 tends to be a truck that carries a lot of weight in the modified truck community due to its historic qualities as well as its iconic body lines.
