Let’s face it, Dodge really launched the mold when they created the Charger and the Challenger respectively. Perhaps they are the strongest cars that the company has to offer and two of the greatest muscle cars in history (with the Charger taking the slight advantage). Indeed, these cars are right up there with the Mustang, as well as the Chevelle, and they are already very strong models in their own right, from generation to generation.

The many modifications done to these vehicles are often as unnecessary as adding tons of make-up to a naturally beautiful woman, or muscles to an Adonis of a man who needs no extra strength to speak of. However, there are in fact many great mods done to these two mammoth cars that the Dodge brand has been putting forth for many generations, especially older models that many owners have decided to spruce up a tad.

But a little sprucing up is fine, leaving the wondrousness of these cars relatively intact. Unfortunately, many have wrecked the integrity of these cars with some pretty preposterous modifications that, let’s face it, are pretty embarrassing, to say the least.

Sorry, but it’s true. Did some of these cars really need that new spoiler? Or how about that pitiful paint job?! Join us as we take a look at some pretty depressing and disappointing modifications that should have been left on the drawing room floor, especially for cars of this standing.

19 CHALLENGER - JUST PLAIN NO!

VIA Reddit

Look, people are doing some great mods out there. No doubt about it, and yes, even on some of these preposterous mods we've seen thus far and will be seeing still, the mechanics involved must be quite hard to see through until the end, the complexities far more difficult to grasp for many out there. But that doesn't change the fact that there are some really unnecessary modifications out there that should have not even been tried, let alone designed to begin with. When I first saw this, I thought a Challenger was sitting on a flatbed truck, and if you still think that's what it is, look closer, my friend.

18 CHALLENGER - "HEY...WEDDING SINGER!"

VIA mecum.com

Talk about an ode to the era of tights, big hair, and music that could have been recorded completely with the use of a synthesizer. Did you ever watch The Wedding Singer with Adam Sandler? Well, if you haven't, it's great and is almost a perfect ode to the era when Billy Idol was king. The film is as much a depiction of the era as it was a pretty funny story about a wedding singer who falls in love, with zany characters coming out of the woodwork in every frame, as is common in Sandler's films. Well, this car here would have been quite comfortable on set—the paint job speaking, quite clearly, for itself.

17 CHARGER - A LITTLE TOO MUCH BLING!

VIA LOWRIDER

Color schemes and modifications need to be well thought out. Because in the end, these mods can go from a pretty decent idea to something way too flashy for their own good. We know that lowriders as a whole are pretty flashy vehicles and the flashier and the more ostentatious they are, the better. But when's enough enough? As far as taking a perfectly fine Charger and committing flashy colors to it and giving it the ability to hop and move with the best lowriders out there, maybe you've already taken your project too far.

16 CHARGER - WHY DO THIS ON PURPOSE?

VIA AutoEvolution

We understand finding the need to give your car a rustic look. Really, we do. But to purposefully adorn your car in a way that makes it look like it's spent the better part of a decade at the back of your garage doesn't advance the vehicle in any shape way or form. All it does is confuse anyone watching or looking at your labor of love with a questioning glance and wondering if you assembled that thing using spare scrap metal from some abandoned scrap yard in the middle of nowhere. Really, does the Charger need or deserve such a rep? We think not.

15 CHALLENGER - CUTE, BUT MAYBE TOO CUTE, EVEN FOR CASANOVA

VIA Shifting Gears

We get romance. Trust us, we do. But romance doesn't always go well with the cars we love, now does it? We think not. But one look at this photo tells us that there are, in fact, those out there that think that yes, why not transform a perfectly good Challenger into a limo perfect for a bride and groom on the big day? Really, we have to be honest and say that this here is an obvious stretch—pardon the pun. Why can't people leave well enough alone? It's like a heavy metal wedding band. cool to think about, but pretty hard to slow dance to when they wind up with a cover of Rob Zombie's "Dragula."

14 CHARGER - WE LOVE SPONGEBOB AS MUCH AS THE NEXT GUY BUT...

VIA MADWHIPS

Let's be honest here, SpongeBob Squarepants and the show's whole cast of characters aren't all that bad. Like The Simpsons, there are indeed a lot of jokes and story lines hidden beneath the surface that adults can laugh at and chuckle over long after the kids have been tucked into bed. The show is indeed quite hilarious and all the characters are good for a laugh, as are the many sketches that have been produced over the years. But to attach the characters, even as beloved as they are, to a Charger, of all things, might be taking it a tad too far, even for us.

13 CHARGER - TOO MUCH

VIA dodgeforum.com

And even when sticking with engine mods, there are those that can go way too far and exceed the boundaries of the perfect mod. There's always that one guy that says: "I need more...more power, more torque, more, more, more..." Well, all that more can get a guy into trouble nine times out of ten. Case in point: this modification here. A Charger modified as a drift car, of all things, with all the excessive trimmings to boot. Say it loud and say it proud, all together now: "CHARGERS WERE NOT MEANT TO DRIFT, THEY WERE MEANT TO DRAG!"

12 CHARGER - NOT WHAT YOU EXPECTED

VIA angelfire.com

You're walking down the street. You're on a pretty populated street today, sipping on a cherry-flavored big gulp, hoping to see some pretty cool sights and get a decent tan on your day off. You're minding your own business when all of a sudden you feel the rumbling beneath your feet. You know what's coming before the car rounds the corner. After all, Chargers are your favorite car and you've learned to memorize the sound of a Charger engine from a mile off. You turn around—almost spilling your big gulp—when the Charger comes bounding towards you, and what you see almost turns your stomach enough to lose the bright red liquid you've already ingested: an ostentatious paint job on the world's greatest car. Hopefully, this little anecdote helps you understand how a paint job can ruin an epic vehicle.

11 CHARGER - AN ADDITION JUST FOR ADDITION'S SAKE

via _1BAD_SRT_/youtube

This is something that can often take a mod from ingenious to just plain unnecessary. In fact, we can go way beyond that and call it pretty overzealous, as well. Certain vehicular modifications go way beyond the overall improvement of a vehicle and there are many small adjustments that can take a pretty decent mod over the edge. Case in point: this particular addition here with the pneumatic—or rather, hydraulic—front spoiler. Talk about Spoiler alert! This addition proves only that the mechanic, either professional or recreational, is good with his hands and can rig up a decent hydraulic pump, and adds nothing to a car that is already a beast in its factory settings and design.

10 CHALLENGER - DUDE...WHERE'S KERMIT'S CAR?

VIA dragtimes.com

Sometimes, a mod doesn't have to go further than the custom paint job. And sometimes, said paint job is really enough to fully wreck a great car. There are times when the wrong paint job can say all the wrong things about the car. And hey, we have no problem with the color green, by no means, but for a Challenger, of all vehicles? I don't know, but green doesn't really scream the traits that this vehicle represents and exudes. Then again, maybe we're being too harsh. But after all, these Challengers should be shown in the best of light at all times, shouldn't they?

9 CHARGER - "NICE MODS"...REALLY?!

via Dream Automotive Lighting /youtube

While searching the net and our many sources for photos for this article, we came across some pretty incredible shots. That's definitely an understatement, but probably the most preposterous thing we came across was the description for this photo! In the description for this particular photo, it's described as a shot of a Dodge Charger with "some pretty nice mods" attached to it. Pretty nice? Well, what's so nice about the modifications anyways? As far as we're concerned, all they did was add some wheels that—let's face it—don't really match the car anyways!

8 CHARGER - THERE'S A LITTLE "MONSTER" IN ALL CHARGERS

VIA Flickr

Hey, I like a nice cold can of Monster Energy drinks as much as the next guy (especially when meeting my deadlines here at Hot Cars), but to adorn a classic such as a Dodge Charger with the designs and emblems of my favorite energy drink is taking it a tad too far, don't you think? And yes, we know that this was done for a campaign of sorts, but still, a Charger is a Charger and its integrity should be respected. Mods that are made to these cars should be minute, as the base is already pretty strong to begin with. Leave well enough alone, people, but please, pass me that can of Ultra Sunrise Monster from the bottom of the cooler, yes, that's it, the cold one!

7 CHALLENGER - NO, IT ISN'T REALLY RUSTED

VIA skepple.net

No, it hasn't been sitting at the back of some recreational mechanic's garage for the last few decades. That car actually was painted to look like that, believe it or not! We simply ask, for the love of all that is good and decent on this planet, why would anyone want to do that? To purposefully age a car with that color scheme or paint job makes no sense. We more than understand that the Challenger and the Charger have a long history, but to take one of the models, even the Hellcat pictured here, and paint it so it's something close to, well, let's just say it rhymes with lazy and leave it at that.

6 CHARGER - SOME KIND OF MONSTER

VIA Pinterest

When James Hetfield and the gang at Metallica wrote the song "Some Kind of Monster" for their album, St. Anger, we're more than sure a car like this wasn't on their minds. And yeah, we know that front man, Hetfield, is indeed a motorhead, but we're sure that this mod would be taking it too far even for the likes of the man who has written more songs about being a gearhead than any other artist rocking it from coast to coast, country to country. Really, does the Charger really need to be transformed this much? Come on, people!

5 CHARGER - TINSEL TOWN TOUCH-UPS

VIA Street Muscle Magazine

Now before you guys get way too excited and or upset at the fact that the sacred Dodge Charger used by Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel's character) in the Fast and Furious films has made this list of embarrassing mods of Chargers and Challengers, give us a brief second to explain. And yes, that is, in fact, one of the ones used in the franchise. But as much as we love it, we have a bone to pick with one of the earlier models used in the film, as the (by now) famous blower seen on the front hood of the car was actually fake. Now, using a fake blower on a Charger...if that isn't embarrassing, we don't know what is.

4 CHARGER - INTERESTING CONCEPT, BUT STILL...NO

VIA Pinterest

Again, as we've said before, the mods made to these cars can be respected for the talent it takes to transform these beasts, mechanically speaking, and hey, we really meant it. And by that same token, the paint jobs we see are, in fact, pretty ingenious, as well, and they might look pretty cool on some other vehicle, but please, people, leave the Charger alone. We can't say it enough. This paint job right here looks okay on the surface and yeah, we get it. "It's like metal and you can see the inner workings of the machine ... isn't it cool?" Honestly, and simply put, no.

3 CHARGER - WHY SO SERIOUS?

VIA WORDPRESS

To say that Heath Ledger played the Joker marvelously in the Christopher Nolan rendition of the famed DC Batman character films would be putting it way too mildly. His performance was, in fact, the best since Jack Nicholson's performance of the same character in the Tim Burton-produced films from the earlier generation. Many have high hopes that the new film in production will live up to this film, the character now being played by Joaquin Phoenix. The picture of the Joker at the back of this car isn't at all what was wrong with it, but instead, we would like to direct your attention to the wheels, as they just don't scream Charger, now do they?

2 CHALLENGER - COLOR SCHEME, PEOPLE

VIA Kendall Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram

And here we go again with the color scheme. The mechanics and body on this car haven't really been touched—like so many of the others in this article—and we can jump up and say hooray to that fact. But let's not get too excited as, once again, the color's all wrong here. Let's face it, I'm half expecting a purple dinosaur to open up the driver's side door and scream: "Howdy Ho, Friends!" When you've got a car as sacred as the Challenger or the Charger, color scheme tells a lot about the vehicle and these cars don't deserve to be depicted in any other way other than powerful and classic.

1 CHARGER - AND NOW FOR A REAR SPOILER OF RIDICULOUS PROPORTIONS

VIA OTORIOCE.COM

Oh man, and if we didn't have enough of those front spoilers we were seeing, somebody had to go ahead and put a terrible one on the back of this poor Charger. When are people gonna realize that spoilers shouldn't be placed on muscle cars, outside of maybe the Firebird? The definition of insanity is consistently trying the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result. For those of you who think that one day, people will like the way a spoiler looks like on a Charger, let's save you some time: It'll never happen.
