Like an embodiment of the failed inventor dad from the movie Gremlins and Homer Simpson as a car designer, Bruce Walden Mohr had a string of ambitious and bizarre creations that never quite worked out, like this 1973 Mohs Safarikar, an attempt at making a luxury car for safaris. Only three of these weird combinations of coachwork and off roader were made, with two surviving including this four year restoration that's being offered for sale on Hemmings.

Business On Bottom, Party On Top

The Safarikar was meant to bring luxury to big game hunting. To handle the rigors of unpaved roads, the International Travelall provided the underpinnings and power plant with the bizarre coachwork that went on top. The blocky simulation of a Rolls Royce is covered in foam and Naugahyde vinyl as a fancy way to protect or at least hide rust.

Hunting From The Seats

Every designer has their quirks. Dr. Porsche firmly believed the engine goes in the back, Mazda occasionally tries to champion the rotary engine. The wheel that Mohs kept trying to reinvent was the door. A previous design for Mohs was the Ostentatienne which was entered through a portal in the trunk in order to put reinforcements where the doors normally go. For the Safarikar, the doors push straight out on rails so that the driver can shoot game from the seat. The top also peels back so that the middle rider can stand in place.

The Mohs Safarikar was officially the creation of the Mohs Seaplane Corporation which made some of Mohs' other crazy designs. Not everything Mohs did was a bizarre failure. The Reflecto strips used on highway lanes and railing is his invention as well as the instant milkshake. He's even the reason tube televisions don't explode. His vehicles have faired worse than his inventions. They include the Ostentatienne he also created a sidecar that would transform into a boat and an extra large scooter.
