When electric cars first started entering the mainstream market a few years ago, automakers made a conscious effort to make them all look different and unique. They used the designs to signify that those models are the future, and that's what's in store for the future of automobiles and four-wheeled transportation.
However, that design philosophy didn't always work, and there were tons of EV oddities. But, in recent times, some automakers have finally cracked the code, and there are currently quite a few EVs that are, beyond question, absolutely beautiful, and also a lot of them that are actually quite sensible.
10 Isdera Commendatore GT
Isdera is a German boutique automaker that is responsible for some truly epic obscure hypercars, such as the Commendatore 112i, with a Mercedes powertrain and a truly epic exterior design. Recently, this little known automaker has made a big comeback with this 4-seat electric super coupe, the Commendatore GT.
Aimed mainly at the Chinese market, the Commendatore GT has a beautiful, minimalistic exterior design, and two electric motors with a combined system output of 805 hp. It also has gullwing doors, and a beautiful, luxuriously appointed interior with bang up-to-date tech.
9 Karma Revero GT
A revival of the short-lived Fisker Karma, the Karma Revero is soon arriving to tackle the likes of the Tesla Model S and the Lucid Air. The original Fisker Automotive went defunct after just a year and a half of Karma production, due to the battery supplier dissolving. However, they're coming back with a new electric SUV.
The new Revero retains the same basic, gorgeous shape as the outgoing Karma, but features updated styling both inside and out. Underneath the skin, it uses the same electric motor-gas engine range extender combo, but the engine is now a turbocharged 3-cylinder from BMW. Total system output is a plentiful 526 hp. It also features exceptional craftsmanship, and every Revero comes with its own unique handmade badge.
8 Porsche Taycan
Porsche's first foray into the battery-powered automotive world has generated nothing but hype and conversation. The new Taycan is one of the most impressive BEV offerings of the current day, better than a Tesla in a lot of ways, and the future is definitely looking bright for the Stuttgart giant.
Aside from the beautiful exterior design, the Taycan offers the latest in tech and luxury features. Not only that, but the performance is exceptional no matter which Taycan you choose. The range-topping Turbo S model has 751 hp, and can do 0-60 in an incredible 2.6 seconds.
7 Audi RS E-Tron GT
One of the most highly anticipated electric performance cars ever, Audi's RS e-tron GT is itching closer and closer to a full reveal very soon. Underneath, it uses the same J1 electric platform as the Taycan, but it gets a very Audi exterior design.
Like the Taycan, the RS e-tron GT adopts a gorgeous four-door fastback design. It was previewed by the e-tron GT concept car a few years ago, the prototype model shows that the exterior design will be largely unchanged. This four-door GT gets dual motors and AWD as standard, allowing for 0-60 in 2.8 seconds and 637 horsepower. Not bad.
6 Lotus Evija
British automaker Lotus has always been known for making some of the best handling and most capable cars of all time, most of them having a penchant for tackling the track and forget about being useful on the road. The Evija is an entirely different type of vehicle.
This breathtaking hypercar is Lotus' first battery-powered vehicle, and it's definitely not bad for a first attempt. The Evija's four electric motors, one for each wheel, give a combined output of nearly 2,000 hp. It also has some of the craziest aerodynamics of any production car. "Production" in this case means limited to 130 units, each one with a starting price of around $2 million.
5 Tesla Model 3
First introduced in 2017, the Model 3 is one of Tesla's most popular offerings. Even though the first customer cars arrived a little bit later than expected, the Model 3 is a solid performer with a great powertrain and some of the best tech on any car right now.
Tesla also seem to have nailed the exterior design of the Model 3. It too is very minimalistic, both inside and out, but it really is a beautiful car. It's proof that simplicity is sometimes better than overstyling a car, and Tesla's design language worked wonders for this vehicle.
4 Lucid Air
It can be argued that every new electric car is a rival for Tesla, but the Lucid Air was actually conceived to blow Tesla into the seaweeds completely. This svelte sedan was first shown off a few years ago as a pre-production prototype, but the production car will be arriving next year.
This is a full-size luxury sedan with an EV powertrain, so the price tag of $100,000+ may not be entirely a surprise. The output and range might be though; the most powerful model promises over 1,000 hp and an incredible 517 miles of range. Outside of FCEVs, that's better than any other battery-powered vehicle on sale today.
3 Rimac Concept One
A hypercar that became known for being crashed by Richard Hammond during the first season of The Grand Tour, the Rimac Concept One is not only one of the most beautiful electric cars ever, but one of the most beautiful cars ever, in general.
Rimac is on a lot of automakers' radars at the moment, as tons of them are sourcing EV tech from the Croatian company, and even entire groups selling some of their subsidiaries to Rimac altogether. The Concept One was an extremely limited production hypercar that featured four electric motors, one for each wheel, with a total of 1,241 hp. The range was around 210 miles, and it could hit 60 in 2.5 seconds and a limited top speed of 211 mph.
2 Karma SC2 Concept
Sadly, this gorgeous grand tourer was never intended to reach production. Instead, Karma used it to provide a glimpse into the future of luxury automotive transportation. The SC2 is packed with insane tech, from lidar arrays, biometric seats and something known as a "contextual touch interface."
Underneath the body, the SC2 doesn't skimp on twist. The quad electric motors provide it with 1,100 hp, and an incredible 10,000 lb/ft of wheel torque. Despite the enormous power, it still provides 350 miles of range and a 0-60 time of less than two seconds. Two! Frankly, we wish it did make it into production.
1 Toyota Mirai
Toyota's first crack at a fuel cell electric vehicle came a few years ago in the form of the Mirai. Even though the tech on the Mirai, meaning "future" in Japanese, was very impressive, the exterior design left a lot to be desired.
Toyota seem to have taken the criticism very seriously, as the new Mirai is absolutely stunning. It seems to take some inspiration from Lexus models, and that's a good thing, because this new design has absolutely transformed the car. While the power output is currently unknown, the Mirai should get around 400 miles of range with a full tank of hydrogen. It's also loaded with tech, and it leans more towards the luxury side of things when it comes to pricing and interior design and quality.
