The average price to buy a new car in the US is almost $36,000. That's quite a lot, really, but you can find an average, reliable car anywhere from $20,000 to $50,000. This range is where the vast majority of all cars find themselves, somewhere in that zone of modestly affordable to luxurious but still practical. Year after year, the average cost of a new car is on the rise, in 2018 it rose 4%, according to Kelley Blue Book. While that may be worrying to most, it's not a worry at all to a certain group of people.

That group of people are those who can buy any car they want, no matter the cost. While the majority of production cars fit into that window, not all of them do. There's a wide selection of cars that are phenomenally expensive and luxurious. The most expensive cars on the market in 2018 range anywhere from the most handcrafted of cars, supreme in comfort in luxury, to the insane exotics, hyper-cars that are designed for one thing, breathtaking performance.

No matter the type of expensive car that fits the fanciful desires of the rich and wealthy, they are all incredible machines and even those of us who can't afford them find enjoyment just looking at them, envying them and coveting them. It's good fun to drool over these incredible machines, made by world-class engineers and artisans. A guilty pleasure, really. With that in mind, let's divulge our desires and take a look at 24 of the most expensive street-legal cars of 2018.

23 Lamborghini Veneno Roadster: $4.5 Million

via motor1.com

These last five cars featured in our list are stepping into a realm of supercar that really begins to transcend not only what a car can be, but also what defines luxury and wealth. The Veneno Roadster by Lamborghini has been called by many, one of the ugliest cars ever made, and that is, in my opinion, quite accurate. I'm normally a huge fan of the way Lamborghinis are styled, yet for some reason, this one is just too much.

It looks way too over the top, bulky, and clunky. But that hasn't stopped anyone from wanting it, or even hesitating at its incredible price tag of 4.5 million US dollars. That's because they've only made nine of them.

22 McLaren Senna: $1 Million

via turnology.com

If a McLaren supercar is the first feature on our list, then that must mean this is going to be a pretty awesome article. And, yes, it most definitely will be. The McLaren Senna is one of a few of McLaren's incredible, barely road legal supercars and it is a spectacular machine.

You can have one yourself for a measly $1 million US. For that price tag, you'll get a turbocharged V8 that outputs an incredible 789 horsepower. According to topspeed.com, "its also the lightest street-legal McLaren ever made." Sounds like a great combination to me.

21 Mazzanti Evantra: $1.2 Million

via pinterst.co.uk

As unique as the last feature was, this one is a 100-times more fascinating and mysterious. This is the Mazzanti Evantra, one of the rarest cars in production. According to cars.usnews.com, "Mazzanti makes the Evantra on commission, and it won’t make more than five per year. Things have always been mysterious with Mazzanti."

Which means that the price of this car is only an estimate as each one is specifically commissioned. The ride is somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.2 million US. The car is sweet, too, and it'll take you to hit  60 mph in only 2.7 seconds.

20 Hennessey Venom GT: $1.4 Million

via venomgt.com

The Hennessey Venom GT was born with a simple idea, a car with 1,000 horsepower that also weighed next to nothing.

It weighed under 3,000 pounds, which meant it had an insane power to weight ratio and actually set a number of world records. Things are only more insane with the new one, which, according to Hennessey, outputs somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,600 horsepower. For almost $1.5 million US, you can have record-setting performance encased in a wicked-sweet body.

19 Lamborghini Centenario LP 770-4: $1.9 Million

via thedrive.com

You may not have heard of the Lamborghini Centenario and that is because it is a pretty limited edition Lamborghini release, hence how it garners nearly $2 million US. That's quite the price tag for this ride but one that is well worth it given the lucrative options on both the inside and outside.

The ride is a beast of a car like all Lamborghini rides should be. As motortrend.com says, "power out of the ferocious and thankfully still naturally aspirated mid-mounted, 6.5-liter V-12 is up from 741 horsepower to 759."

18 Zenvo TS1 GT: $1.9 Million

via carbuzz.com

Think of this as the more expensive, more powerful, more insane brother of the Zenvo ST1. Digital trends sums it up quite well when they say of this insanely powerful supercar:

"Zenvo’s 1,163-hp, 233-mph supercar invokes the fury of Norse gods."

It does, for a fact, and with that sweet body kit designed to bring in more downforce from every possible square inch of surface area, there's no doubt that this car is equipped to handle some monumental forces from a twin supercharged V8 engine. It'll get you to 60 in 2.8 seconds.

17 Koenigsegg Regera: $2 Million

via koenigsegg.com

You won't be able to buy a Koenigsegg unless you are already a multimillionaire, as all their car models are the most luxurious of hypercars. This is the Regera, and it's worth 2 million US dollars. Despite the price, the fact that a car as incredible as this exists should be more than enough.

A hypercar hybrid, the engine of the Regera produces 1500 horsepower and will take you to 60 incredibly fast, as Jalopnik points out: "Koenigsegg built a car with one gear that uses electric power and an internal combustion engine working in concert to create one of the fastest accelerating cars of all time." Worth every penny, really, and revolutionary.

16 Koenigsegg One:1: $2 Million

via motor1.com

The Koenigsegg One:1 is an extraordinary piece of machinery, one that proved a big point to the slew of hybrid supercars that entered the market at the same time.

That's because, as Jalopnik says, this car was "designed to compete with hybrid supercars like the LaFerrari and McLaren P1 without any hybrid assistance."

Its name comes from the technical fact that this supercar has a near perfect one to one ratio, which at one time was thought to be a dream from a road legal car. Here's the proof of otherwise.

15 Lamborghini Sesto Elemento: $2.2 Million

via motonetworks.com

"Sesto Elemento," is Italian for "sixth element," and it's a great description for the raw, elemental power of this Lamborghini masterpiece. It'll go from 0-62 in a blazing, almost mind-bending 2.5 seconds. According to Lamborghini, this is record-breaking. And it has an odd-firing 5.2 Liter V10 that will give it 562 horsepower.

While that doesn't seem like a lot these days, it's not just about power, it's about weight ratio. And this ultra-rare hypercar barely weighs a ton. Its name is in reference to the sixth element on the periodic table, carbon, as it's made entirely of carbon fiber.

14 Ferrari La Ferrari Aperta: $2.2 Million

via flickr.com

The LaFerrari Aperta is the topless version of one of the most legendary and incredible cars ever made in the history of motoring. This is a hybrid supercar that has two engines, both an electric engine and a petrol engine, which means that they work in concert to create something with otherworldly performance, a truly groundbreaking achievement.

The LaFerrari has a V12 along with the electric motor, which gives the machine a staggering and effortless 949 horsepower.

This car redefines speed and elegance in a way that only Ferrari can do. It's yours for a measly 2.2 million US dollars.

13 Ferrari F60 America: $2.5 Million

via car-revs-daily.com

This car is more of a collector car than an insanely overpowered monster of a machine. Made to celebrate the sixty year anniversary of Ferrari, this car is, to me, honestly, quite unattractive, especially compared to many other Ferrari models. But, since it is a commemorative special edition limited release, the F60 will sell for 2.5 million US dollars.

It's a perfect example of Ferrari continuing a tradition, as this car will not only just sell for insane prices new, but will continue to increase in value as the years go on.

12 Bugatti Chiron: $2.7 Million

via motor1.com

Bugatti was one of the first supercar companies to completely redefine what exactly it was that a car was capable of, and since the original Bugatti Veyron's debut, it has sparked some heavy competition from car manufacturers around the globe. This has had a downward ripple effect that benefits us all, even if the tiniest fraction of us can afford an almost 3 million US dollar hypercar, like the Chiron, one of Bugatti's latest creations, and definitely the next step forward from the Veyron.

The Chiron has a signature W12 engine with a stunning 1,479 horsepower output.

11 Pagani Huayra BC: $2.8 Million

via pfaffauto.com

Pagani is known for its insane, barely road legal supercar creations and the Huayra BC is just one of the these. Technically a re-release of sorts, the BC just signifies an improved version of the engine from the original Huayra.

With a five star rating from Car and Driver, this car is really the cream of the crop when it comes to supercars, and it earns its phenomenal price tag.

With the BC, the engine got a tune-up and "a revised 7-speed single-clutch gearbox." (carbuzz.com) The revisions made the drivetrain lighter. Combine that with a lighter shell, and you've got some pretty serious increase in performance.

10 Ferrari Pininfarina Sergio: $3 Million

via motor1.com

I really like the originality of this car, but I honestly have to say that I really don't like the way it looks. I think the lights are not very attractive and the body shape is just too unbalanced for it to work. It looks a lot better from the side, and that's the issue, because while it's best viewed from the side, it also has to look good from all angles, and, at least to me, it doesn't.

Nonetheless, it's an extraordinarily rare and collectible Ferrari, which means most all else is disregarded, save for one thing: collectibility. The Ferrari name alone paired with the rarity of this car means it'll go for a cool 3 million US dollars.

9 Aston Martin Valkyrie: $3.2 Million

via it.wikipedia.com

If there's any car to get truly excited about, it's this: the Aston Martin Valkyrie. Just look at it.

It truly is one of the most extraordinary looking cars anyone has ever seen. The engineering behind it is incredible.

I'd suggest looking up a few articles about it if you're more interested, but one of the coolest features of this Valkyrie (besides its baffling power and performance as the fastest street car in the world) is the engineering of its aerodynamics, where it not only can fit an entire person underneath but also can generate massive downforce while still being insanely slippery for pure speed.

8 Limited Edition Bugatti Veyron by Mansory Vivere: $3.4 Million

via mansory.com

This Bugatti Veyron is significantly more expensive than a regular Veyron for a number of reasons, chief of which is simply stated by saying that it is collectible, limited model.

Designed and modified by Mansory Vivere, this very special Bugatti has "received a comprehensive facelift at the front, consisting of modified wings, a shortened bonnet, and a striking front apron. The integrated LED daytime running lights in the front section create a particular accent, and the stylized “V” used pays homage to the name VIVERE," according to mansory.com. The end result is a recognizable but surprisingly different creation, one that is for the most discerning of discerning car buyers.

7 Lykan Hypersport: $3.4 Million

via 1zoom.me

The Lykan Hypersport lives up to its name in both its looks and its raw, staggering performance. There is a reason it has a 3.4 million US dollar price tag, and that's because it is an engineering masterpiece.

To me one of the greatest parts about this lean and mean black sheep is that it's powered by an engine with one of the greatest layouts in the world: a flat six.

Yes, that's right, this multimillion dollar supercar is powered by a twin-turbocharged flat six. It produces 780 horsepower, and due to the magnificent design of the rest of the car, that means it's really fast. It will launch to 60 in a matter of 2.8 seconds, which is phenomenal.

6 McLaren P1 LM: $3.6 Million

via autogespot.co.uk

This is just about as close as we get to the ragged and brutal edge of what qualifies as street legal.

Like thewisdompost.com says: "The McLaren P1 LM is not a production car, but more or less a street-legal version of the track-only McLaren P1 GTR. The car was converted by the British firm Lanzante, who bought the original P1 built by McLaren. It was then made and sold only to a selected group of buyers in the US, Japan, UAE, and the UK." This not only makes this an incredible supercar at the top of the list for most incredible cars ever made but makes it rare too, which is why it has such an extraordinarily huge price tag.

5 McLaren P1 GTR: $3.6 Million

via topspeed.com

Our last post is only bested by, well, by itself, virtually, because the P1 GTR is technically illegal for road use, but, as driving.ca explains:

"Only McLaren might know for certain how many street-legal P1 GTRs exist since the car was originally a track-only endeavor limited to 58 units. But more than a few owners had the P1 GTR, with its twin-turbo V8 and electric powertrain generating 986 horsepower, converted for street use."

It's crazy to think that an unknown number of what some consider the most incredibly performing track cars ever made were converted to roam the streets, legally.

4  Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita: $4.8 Million

via motorauthority.com

Nearing the top of the list for the most expensive supercar, Koenigsegg makes another appearance, with one of their more opulent offerings: the CCXR Trevita.

The name comes from a Swedish word that's translated as "three whites," due to the fact that this car is essentially, as Koenigsegg says themselves: "a diamond on wheels."

They talk about the process behind their white carbon fiber, too, how they "developed a unique coated fiber solution for the Trevita program that transformed the fibers from black to a sparkling, silvery white. When sunlight hits the Trevita, it sparkles as if millions of tiny white diamonds are infused inside the visible carbon fiber bodywork."
