9 Ford Vs. Ferrari

Based on a fascinating true story, the bitter rivalry between Henry Ford II and Enzo Ferrari in the 60s was given the full Hollywood treatment by director James Mangold with the Ford vs. Ferrari movie. It starred Academy Award winners Matt Damon and Christian Bale.

It also tells the story behind the rivalry, and the people that gave birth to the Ford GT40, a legendary American race car that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans and beat the Europeans on their own turf.

7 1 (Life On The Limit)

Whereas Rush was centered on the story of Niki Lauda and James Hunt's rivalry in the 1970s, this action documentary follows through on what the Hollywood movie was based on, and it tells about the glamour, the excitement, and the danger that comes with Formula One racing back in the 70s.

1: Life On The Limit features the largest list of F1 interviewees ever assembled, as the drivers who have survived racing from that era share stories on how tragic fatalities were common at the time.

6 Truth In 24

Truth in 24 follows the story of Audi and their preparations for the 2008 24 Hours of Le Mans. Basically, it was an insight on how a team operates during the course of an endurance race, with Jason Statham serving as the film's narrator, and interviews from numerous Audi drivers and officials at the time.

Facing tough competition from Peugeot, the Audi team pull out all the stops to make the most out of their three-year-old R10 TDI Le Mans Prototype, and complete three straight wins for the diesel-powered race car.

5 Thunderbolt

This might be one of the greatest JDM movies we've ever seen, and it even has Jackie Chan as the lead actor. The movie Thunderbolt was released in 1995, right at the peak of the golden era of Japanese sports cars, and a lot of them have been featured in this action film.

Jackie Chan plays a Hong Kong race car driver and mechanic who has crossed paths with an international street racing criminal driver and goes to a point where he has to win a race in order to get his kidnapped sisters back.

4 Formula 1: Drive To Survive

Formula 1: Drive To Survive is a documentary series by Netflix and Formula One that features all the stories that go on behind the scenes of an actual race weekend. It gives an inside look at the lives of the drivers and the teams competing in the sport, together with the twists and turns happening during the course of a race.

Drive To Survive is now in its third season, and features the stories that happened in the 2020 Formula One season. It is set to return with the fourth season, which will be released in 2022.

3 Senna

Similar to what the Netflix documentary Schumacher was, the Senna documentary features the life and death of the Brazilian racing legend, Ayrton Senna.

The documentary highlights Senna's rise to Formula One stardom, his fierce rivalry with Alain Prost, and eventually his fatal accident at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.

2 Days Of Thunder

Days of Thunder shows the hurdles that a young driver in NASCAR would have to overcome if he was to become successful in the series. Tom Cruise plays the young driver Cole Trickle as he embarks on a journey to win the Daytona 500.

Basically, the story of Days of Thunder is clearly related to what racing drivers experience in real life. Overcoming adversaries, pulling through obstacles and mental challenges along the way, and eventually finding that slight edge over other competitors to achieve success.

1 Faster

Filmed at the start of the four-stroke era of the MotoGP, the Faster documentary film focuses on the rise of Valentino Rossi into a racing superstar and his bitter rivalry with fellow Italian Max Biaggi.

It also features an interesting take on the history of motorcycle racing, with interviews from former racing champions Mick Doohan, Wayne Rainey, and Kevin Schwantz sharing the difficulty of riding the two-stroke 500cc Grand Prix machines of the past, and how MotoGP has evolved in the Rossi era.
