The movie world is a common place for motorheads to find some of the greatest vehicles in history being used in some of the best films ever made which have taken a car from simply being fantastic to becoming iconic.

Some cars have become so synonymous with the movies that they are in that it is all people can think of when it comes to them. Yet on the other side of the coin, some of the car choices in films have left many people scratching their heads as to why.

Within this article we will be looking at both sides of that situation, looking at five of the most iconic cars in movie history, as well as five choices that made no sense at all.

10 Iconic: Ecto-1 (Ghostbusters)

Not every iconic car is an incredible vehicle, but some vehicles just suit the characters that use them perfectly and that is certainly the case with the Ecto-1 which was the van that was used by the Ghostbusters.

Whenever you think of the popular movie franchise, this exact car will no doubt come to mind due to how iconic it is, with the converted 1959 Cadillac ambulance being well known for specifically being in this film.

Because of the comedic elements of the Ghostbusters franchise, this is the perfect car for the group as anything too serious and fancy would just have felt out of place for the group.

9 Made No Sense: Lotus Espirit (The Spy Who Loved Me)

Now, for the most part, the James Bond franchise is one of the most reliable movie franchises for iconic cars with the spy driving some incredible vehicles throughout the history of the franchise.

However, the Lotus Espirit was not one of those and was actually one movie car that suspended disbelief a little, with the car turning into a submarine partway through the movie.

Even though many fans of the franchise love this car, it just took things to a very unrealistic level, even for a James Bond movie. Funnily enough, this car is now owned by Elon Musk in real life.

8 Iconic: Mini Cooper (The Italian Job)

When you think about epic car chases, sports cars are often what first comes to mind, yet in the classic 1969 film, The Italian Job, the movie changed that idea and used the classic Mini Cooper instead. Whilst they might not be the first car people think of when it comes to epic car chases, but the fact that the Mini was so small meant that they were able to do things that no other cars would have been able to do. Fitting into tight spaces, squeezing around tight corners allowed for some incredible car chases with the Mini's becoming incredibly iconic from these movies.

7 Made No Sense: Wingo (Cars 2)

Yes, this is an animation movie and therefore ridiculous things should be expected as it is a movie that features talking cars, but when the entire franchise is built on having realistic vehicles when Pixar throw in something like Wingo it is hard to question things.

Wingo isn't one of the main characters from Cars 2, but that doesn't mean that he can just be forgotten about as Pixar really took some liberties with this one simply to get in a certain look that would help sell some toys.

The amount of spoilers on this sports car is just insane and completely impossible, whilst the wing-resistant lower-body elements can also not go without a mention, as well as the awful paint job, making this one of the worst vehicles in the popular franchise.

6 Iconic: Aston Martin DB5 (Goldfinger)

When it comes to James Bond cars there is nothing more iconic than the Aston Martin DB5 which has been used in countless Bond movies over the years but was originally used in Goldfinger.

The classic Aston Martin is 007's ride of choice and for good reason, with the car having the perfect blend of speed and class that perfectly suits the spy, hence why he is constantly given it in the movies.

Of course, the DB5 is always loaded with incredible technology in order to give Bond the upper hand against whatever villains he comes up against.

5 Made No Sense: 6000 SUX (Robocop)

The 6000 SUX was supposedly designed to be bad intentionally, but even with that in mind, the vehicle is still terrible and even being part of a classic movie like Robocop couldn't stop that fact.

The car is so large and visually ugly, with the giant rear-engined land barge looking ridiculous as it was driven around in the film and didn't look futuristic in any way at all.

It is certainly fair to say that the Ford Taurus police cars look a lot better than this vehicle, which shouldn't really have been the case in a movie that features robots and cyborgs.

4 Iconic: Chevrolet Camaro (Transformers)

The Transformers series has created plenty of iconic cars throughout the years but there is nothing more iconic than Bumblebee, with the black and yellow Chevrolet Camaro being the first thing people think about when the movies are talked about.

Bumblebee is arguably the most popular character from the movie franchise and Michael Bay did a fantastic job in choosing the Camaro as the car for the singing robot, with a stylish look suiting the playful character.

Transformers is known for fast-paced car chases and therefore it isn't a surprise to see a vehicle like this used in the movies and it will now forever be known as the Bumblebee car to most people.

3 Made No Sense: Mazda RX8 (X-Men 2)

You might think that cars in superhero movies are utterly pointless considering the fact that the characters involved are supposed to have powers, but they are becoming more and more frequent in those types of movies.

In X2, Cyclops drives a Mazda RX8, but the vehicle goes against everything the film is trying to say about the character, with the X-Men leader supposedly being young and cool, the car just screams anything but that.

Instead of helping to make Cyclops seem like a likeable character, the car just helps the fans of the movie dislike him, with this choice simply making no sense at all.

2 Iconic: DeLorean DMC-12 (Back To The Future)

When it comes to movie vehicles they simply do not get any more iconic than the DeLorean DMC-12, which is used in Back To The Future, with the failed supercar being known as the greatest time machine possible.

Whilst the movie franchise itself has gone down as one of the greatest of all time, the DeLorean itself played a major part in that success as the car suited Doc Brown's crazed character to perfection.

The fact that people still make themselves this car today shows just how iconic it has become, with everyone knowing exactly what it is as soon as they see it.

1 Made No Sense: Mitsubishi Eclipse (2 Fast 2 Furious)

To say the Fast And Furious franchise is the biggest and best movie franchise based solely around cars, you would expect that they would all hit the mark, but after so many movies it is to be expected that a few poor choices would slip through the cracks.

The third-generation Eclipse was a horrible looking car, to begin with, yet for some reason, those in charge decided to make it more hideous by adding a horrible lavender finish and dreadful graphics.

Nothing about the vehicle screams cool or aggressive, like most in the franchise do, and instead, it ended up being the worst car to ever appear in the films.
