When the best car movies are mentioned today, the Fast & Furious series usually comes to mind. Gearheads have come to love this eight movie (so far) saga that focuses on everything from racing to heists to saving the world with cars. The movies boast some amazing rides that range from classic muscle cars to super high-tech new models. Whatever type of car a gearhead might love, these movies boast that in spades. As is only natural in Hollywood, a slew of F&F imitators has emerged—some better than others—to boast other great movies. There’s also the fact that the Fast series really borrowed elements from other classic car movies before it. Some cars can be notable for the movie itself yet not as impressive as the F&F ones. These include the mini-Coopers from The Italian Job, the DeLorean from Back to the Future and even that classic Trans Am of Smokey and the Bandit.

But other cars are notable for being rides even the F&F crew would envy. Some are classic muscle machines that boast top-flight engines and controls that newer models can’t match. A few are fresh and exciting speed cars that feel like rockets on wheels. There are even a few motorcycles that offer the speed and power of cars in a quarter of the space. Some come from famous car-themed movies, while others made brief but very notable appearances in other types of films. They boast great designs and great performance, making them a must-watch for viewers and must-gets for collectors. Here are 25 great movie rides that put the Fast series to shame and prove that any kind of film can have a stunning ride.

25 Kawasaki ZZR 250, Kill Bill: Volume 1

via hiconsumption

Quinten Tarantino loves his classic cars in his movies. Yet Kill Bill: Volume 1 boasts a terrific bike that would be right out of any F&F film. Hunting down former ally O-Ren to Japan, the Bride (Uma Thurman) takes to the night roads on a Kawasaki ZZR 250. It’s bright yellow to match her Bruce Lee-inspired outfit and looks glorious as she drives around. Its 4-stroke 2-cylinder engine allows it to go from zero to 100 mph in six seconds and get through nearly any obstacles. The movie doesn’t focus on the bike too much as the Bride is more interested in a massive sword battle against an army of thugs. Yet it’s a glorious bike as beautiful as the woman riding it.

24 1970 Chevy Nova and 1969 Dodge Charger, Death Proof

flickr.com

One-half of the Grindhouse movie, Death Proof is Quinten Tarantino's homage to 1970s car movies. The characters openly talk of classics like Vanishing Point and much of the film focuses on some great car antics. While the 1970 Dodge Challenger Zoe Bell hangs off of is nice, it’s not the best car in the film. That belongs to the 1969 Dodge Charger used by Kurt Russell’s character. A mad stunt driver, Russell has his cars designed to take major damage just so he can run others off the road. He shows that earlier by smashing up a Chevy Nova in a bad crash. The Charger is used in a long and thrilling case with the Challenger, taking some major hits but coming back for more. The movie is a joy for lovers of classic cars and it makes sense it boasts a couple on its own.

23 The Interceptor, Mad Max

JustACarGuy.com

The movie that made Mel Gibson a star still remains a classic of the post-apocalyptic film genre. Max is a special cop hunting down a brutal crime lord. To give him a boost, Max is given the V8 Interceptor. In reality, a 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT Coupe, the car was modified in the movie to look like a futuristic machine. The movie has the mechanics showing off its powerful V8 dual overhead cam engine which, thanks to the blower, makes 600 horsepower at the wheels. It’s soon pushed on the road with Max loving it. The car is a beauty as it’s not only fast but amazingly powerful and able to smash up other cars with little damage. Sure, the following movies had fancier vehicles yet somehow this ride remains a sweet one to dominate in any landscape.

22 1969 Mustang, John Wick

topgear.com

Keanu Reeves’ fantastic comeback film is hailed for its realistic action. John Wick seems to be a nice and normal guy who drives an absolutely gorgeous 1969 Mustang. It’s no wonder that when he pulls it into a gas station, a young Russian mobster offers a small fortune for it. When John turns him down, the guy breaks into his house to steal it. It’s only when he tries to sell it off that he discovers John Wick is a former hitman so deadly even the Russian mob is terrified of him. John is soon on a bloody path of revenge that forges the movie. The car itself is a great ride that’s used in a nice airport sequence. The sequel opens with John fighting a dozen guys to get it out of a garage and it’s no wonder he goes so far to get back this amazing ride.

21 BMW S 1000 XR, Resident Evil

Carsifu.my

The Resident Evil movies are known for their over-the-top action (fitting for the adaptation of a hit video game) and some wild FX. For the final film, Mila Jovovich’s Alice is on a quest to get to a ruined Raccoon City in order to save humanity. After losing her first ride, she finds a new one on the side of the road. A BMW S 1000 XR, it’s a bike that’s sleek and stylish while also a killer on the road. In short, the perfect ride for the character. That it manages to make a racer work with a straight seat is remarkable as the 4-cylinder in-line engine allows it to hit 165 mph while hugging corners tight. It’s a great machine perfect for the zombie-hunting warrior and practically a co-star along with Jovovich.

20 1968 Ford Mustang, Bullitt

via ifc center

In the annals of classic chase films, Bullitt still reigns supreme. In one of his most iconic roles, Steve McQueen is the title character of a San Francisco cop protecting a witness from the mob. As cool as McQueen is in the role, it’s his car that’s so well remembered. This 1968 Ford Mustang is sleek and fast, hugging corners and just looks the perfect vehicle for this cop. It’s on display in what remains one of the greatest car chase scenes ever put on film as McQueen tries to shake a pursuer through the streets of San Fran. The car is a true masterpiece much loved by collectors. In fact, an episode the CBS drama Blue Bloods centered around the search for the original Mustang. It’s a cool car that still ranks among the best in movie history.

19 1977 Lotus Espirit, The Spy Who Loved Me

Via autoevolution.com

The James Bond movies can have a lot of great cars but this stands on its own. Bond and his ally, Anya, are in Italy where Bond has been given a Lotus Espirit from Q. The duo are soon chased by both cars and a helicopter dropping bombs at them. Bond uses some fancy tricks like oil slicks and even fire to take out the cars. As the copter closes in, Bond drives the Lotus right off a dock. Before the audience can wonder what Bond is playing at, the touch of a switch transforms the car into a submarine. There was no CGI back then so that’s an actual Lotus remade to look as if it’s pulling in its wheels and extending “flippers” to navigate underwater. Bond uses it to take out some enemy divers before driving onto the beach in front of stunned onlookers. Even the F&F movies haven’t gone that far yet.

18 Aprilia Mille RSV, Torque

flickr.com

The opening of this 2004 movie is a deliberate shot at the F&F films. Two high-powered cars are going at it on a long desert road, when suddenly, a guy on an Aprilia Mille RSV tears past both of them. He passes right by a sign that says “cars suck.” This sets the mood for the movie which is very silly but boasts a fantastic selection of high-powered biking machines. The plot is based around a biker protecting his girlfriend, who’s been framed, from cops and other gangs. That’s just a flimsy excuse for scores of chase scenes and races. The Mille is a great cycle used in several of the chase scenes as its superclutch and some modifications allow it to reach nearly 180 mph and look amazing on the road. The movie may be rather forgettable but this bike is one to remember.

17 Aston Martin V12 Vanquish, Die Another Day

007james.com

This car has gotten some infamy but it should still count as a major ride. In this James Bond entry, Bond goes to see the new Q (John Cleese) who boasts of his brand new car. When an empty platform shows up, Bond thinks this is a prank. As a car suddenly appears, Bond speaks for the audience with “you have to be joking.” It’s an Aston Martin 12 Vanquish, a terrific high-speed luxury ride that has the usual Bond tricks (laser, machine guns, bullet-proof body and windows) and even able to drive on ice. The trick is that the car has a “light-emitting polymer skin” that, for intents and purposes, renders it invisible. That’s led to this film slammed as over-the-top even by Bond standards. However, a car with a camouflage mode is one trick even the F&F movies have yet to match and only Bond could pull off.

16 2008 Audi A8, Iron Man

via Iron Man Wiki

One would expect Tony Stark to have the absolute best cars imaginable. This is a multi-billionaire and super-tech genius who loves to flaunt his wealth around. Sure enough, the first major MCU movie has Tony working on his armors right in the same garage with cars that would make any gearhead drool in envy. A great one is the Audi A8 as its 420-hp, 4.2-liter V-8 engine and top-level design is right out of Stark’s playbook. A great story is that the big battle was going to have Iron Man driving the Audi into an armored villain and split it in half. It turns out the car is so well-built, Jon Faverau realized even Iron Man couldn’t just shatter it in half so the scene was re-written. That’s a testament to a car even Shellhead has to appreciate.

15 2011 Koenigsegg Agera R Replica, Need For Speed

Via carthrottle.com

Loosely based on a video game, this drama has Aaron Paul as a driver falsely convicted for causing a friend’s fatal crash. Out of prison, he’s out to redeem himself by taking part in an epic race. Naturally, there are scores of great cars in the film (the villain offers a Lamborghini to anyone who can take Paul out) and Paul’s own 2014 Ford Mustang is nice. Yet the 2011 Koenigsegg Agera R is a true show-stealer. It’s used by the bad guy in the earlier race crash and then Paul ends up using it himself for the climactic showdown. A stunning machine, its carbon fibre/Kevlar body is designed to be sleek and fast to the point of 247 mph. It’s no wonder it’s such a prize given its amazing abilities. The movie wasn’t a hit yet it boasts a car that would leave Toretto in the dust.

14 1969 Dodge Charger R/T 440, Drive Angry

pinterest.com

Nicolas Cage is known for some offbeat choices in his films. So it should be little surprise he was drawn to Drive Angry. The plot has him as a crook who escapes Hell to track down a cult leader who wants to unleash global destruction. It turns out Cage has an affinity for classic cars, although his is lost early on. He meets with Piper (Amber Heard) and soon joins with her by using her 1969 Dodge Charger R/T 440. The movie claims it’s a ’68 Charger but it appears they just made a few modifications to a later model. Either way, it’s a beauty as it handles the various wild chase scenes and Cage believable handling this classic model. The movie has a plot as bizarre as its lead actor but it also boasts one sweet major ride.

13 Aston Martin DB5, Goldfinger

via Houston Chronicle

It makes sense that arguably the best Bond movie has the best Bond movie car. It’s set up early on as Bond meets Q who introduces him to his new Aston Martin DB5 and goes over its tricks, including an ejector seat. When Bond exclaims “you must be joking”, Q gets the priceless rejoinder “I never joke about my work, 007!” Already a hit for its luxury design, this DB5 came with oil slick sprays, machine guns in the headlights, a bullet-proof pop-up screen and that ejector seat. It became so popular that it was used again in Thunderball and is still the car fans associate Bond with. Even the F&F crew would have to envy the ride 007 uses.

12 2002 TVR Tuscan Speed-6, Swordfish

joelstricklandwordpress.com

Yes, this 2001 action movie was a critical flop that provided a lot more style than substance. Hugh Jackman is hacker recruited by arms dealer John Travolta into a complex scheme. Halle Berry is a lady whose loyalties are constantly in question and the movie offers some laughably crazy action scenes. However, it can also boast one sweet car. Travolta drives around in a TVR Tuscan Speed-6 that fits his high-class lifestyle. The British-designed automobile can reach some high speeds as Travolta enjoys driving it through traffic as fast as possible. It’s showcased in a thrilling car chase/shootout with some enemies of Travolta where he uses the convertible roof well. The movie may be a mess but at least it boasts one gorgeous speed machine.

11 Jaguar Xk140 Roadster, Cruel Intentions

imcdb.com

This dark 1999 drama has Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar as step-siblings who enter into a bet on whether Phillipe can seduce the chaste Reese Witherspoon. His prize for winning is decidedly NSFW. Her prize is his car—and when you see it—you know why she’d go to any lengths to win this bet. A classic Jaguar XK-140 Roadster is a beautiful machine that Phillipe uses to take Witherspoon out on some romantic drives. It remains one of the best cars Jaguar has ever put out with its huge rear and plush seating offering comfort as well as great speeds. Even the F&F crew would be envious of a ride that’s worth any bet to win as a prize.

10 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu, Drive

pinterest.com

The trailers made Drive look like your typical F&F knock-off. Instead, critics went wild for this gripping crime drama starring Ryan Gosling as a getaway driver who gets in over his head on a deal. The movie is a great thrill ride with terrific shooting to enhance the chase scenes and far more realistic in its depiction of car crashes. Gosling’s character uses a 1973 Chevrolet Cheville Malibu for the majority of his driving. It’s a great machine, able to slip unnoticed in parking lots yet a beast on the road. Gosling uses it for some major chases and it’s tough enough to survive a few bad crashes as well. Gosling himself chose the car from a junkyard and “did everything except the transmissions.” This labor of love pays off for a classic car movie.

9 1967 GTO, xXx

barrett-jackson.com

After turning down a F&F sequel, Vin Diesel tried to start his own action franchise with xXx. As Xander Cage, stunt rider turned secret agent, Diesel clearly enjoys some nice action rides. His big moment comes when he gets a classic 1967 GTO and drives it to the high-tech “spy shop.” The camera shows a long list of weapons and engine parts as Xander declares “I want all that in here.” The result was a terrific machine that combines a classic muscle car with high-tech devices and weapons. Obviously, this is a customized job yet it works out wonderfully with handling some major chase and action scenes. It returned in the sequel to showcase a car only Diesel could pull off with such skill.

8 1961 Ferrari GT California, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

manxforums.com

The set-up is great. In this classic comedy, Ferris (Matthew Broderick) talks best buddy Cameron (Alan Ruck) into lending him his dad’s car for a joyride into Chicago. Leading into a garage, Cameron introduces this priceless car as “Oh Yeah,” plays on the soundtrack. Technically, it was actually a 1985 Modena GT Spyder California as there was no way the producers could afford a real GT California for the film. It looks beautiful though and it’s no wonder the gang loves it as they drive it into the city. This leads to how the valets at a parking garage take it for a joyride themselves that puts a lot of miles on it. The car ends up smashed to pieces yet it’s a key part of this iconic ‘80s film as well as one sweet ride.

7 BMW i8, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

via Pinterest

The Mission: Impossible movies have always boasted some nice rides. However, Ghost Protocol has one of the best ones of the bunch. The conclusion of the film has Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) on a high-speed chase to stop a madman from using a suitcase device to set off a war. He and his partner (Paula Patton) leap into a BMW i8 at a big show to give chase. This electric hybrid is quite light which means it can reach some pretty epic speeds. That’s showcased as it takes off fast and weaves through traffic like a rocket. True, the fancy holographic displays are for the movie yet the real deal still boasts some serious power as Ethan takes it to a rotating garage for a unique fight scene. That this was a prototype shouldn’t take away from how awesome it was for a ride.

6 1970 Dodge Challenger, Bad Moms

motorheadmania.com

This wild comedy has Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn as three mothers who are sick and tired of being taken for granted. They finally start to cut loose in a variety of ways. For Kunis, she decides to take her kids to school in “Daddy’s Special Car.” That’s a 1970 Dodge Challenger that’s been modified with new wheels, taking out the usual trim but retaining a bright red paint job. The movie shows Kunis loving the feel of it as she takes the kids to school in this sweet ride with the slow-motion making it feel more epic. She later uses it to treat the ladies to a wild night on the town. The movie may not be a huge action piece yet this gorgeous machine would be right at home in the F&F movies, especially with someone as exotic as Kunis behind the wheel.
