Tesla is hoping that its new all-electric cybertruck pick-up will rival the Ford F150. The new model, which is set to debut tonight in Los Angeles, promises maximum performance and a reasonable price. Launching near founder Elon Musk’s SpaceX headquarters will certainly give the new truck a futuristic appeal, while Musk has already alluded to the cult 1982 sci-fi thriller Blade Runner as an inspiration for the vehicle.

Tesla teased the cybertruck at the recent launch event for the Model Y, saying they hoped to debut the new commercial vehicle in 2020. Musk also unveiled a teaser image on his Twitter account, which showcased the new model’s bluff rear end and full-width light-bar. The interior is expected to have a six-seat layout.

Previously, Musk announced that the forthcoming Tesla pick-up truck would exceed the Ford F-150 in practicality and offer a sportier style than the Porsche 911. He also promised a base-price “well under” $50,000. All of which remains to be seen.

The pick-up will include a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive electric powertrain and a large battery pack. Musk has anticipated a range of between 400 and 500 miles as well as off-road capability with new tractional control settings intended to mimic mechanical locking differentials. The model will also include standard self-levelling suspension.

The pick-up truck will probably share many of the underpinnings of the Model X SUV; therefore, it would afford upgraded performance. It is also expected to deliver similar specs as the Model X, going from 0 to 60 mph in roughly six seconds, in spite of its 2.5-ton weight.

Mostly, the Tesla pick-up is intended to be commercially functional with 240-volt outlets for heavy power tools. Musk has also asserted that the truck will be able to power these tools for prolonged periods of time from the truck's battery pack.

Unlike rivals, Tesla is projected to only offer the double-cab body style, rather than single- and king-cab variations, to keep costs down.
