Like most carmakers and brands in the world, Porsche has entered the world of electric vehicles. The all-electric Porsche Taycan served as its ticket, and the German sports carmaker is not going anywhere but forward. In fact, Porsche wants EVs to account for 80 percent or more of its overall sales by the start of the next decade.
Over 80% Of Car Sales Will Be EVs In 2030
In 2021, partly electrified or all-electric models accounted for nearly 40 percent of Porsche’s new deliveries in Europe. But Porsche’s ambitions won’t allow it to remain at this pace. Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, disclosed they expect around half of all new Porsche sales in 2025 to be of electric vehicles, including plug-in hybrids.
Porsche, however, plans to make up for the remaining half in the next five years since 2025. The carmaker wants to be carbon-neutral on the balance sheet in 2030, and that would entail all-electric accounting for more than 80 percents of its sales in the year.
To achieve this, Porsche will invest in its charging infrastructure, adding new charging stations with its partners and on its own. It will also invest into battery systems and module production, with the newly founded Cellforce Group taking care of development and series production of high-performance battery cells by 2024.
Taycan Is Third-Best Selling Porsche In 2021
For the first time in its history, Porsche exceeded 300,000 units of deliveries. The carmaker delivered 301,915 vehicles to customers around the world in 2021, which is nearly 30,000 units more than its sales in 2020 (272,162 deliveries). Leading the bestsellers for Porsche in 2021 were the Macan (88,362 deliveries) and the Cayenne (83,071 deliveries).
In 2021, deliveries of the all-electric Taycan overtook that of the 911 (41,296 vs. 38,464 units). Nevertheless, the figure for the 911 represents a new all-time high.
More than a third of overall Porsche deliveries were to customers in China, where it surged 8 percent to nearly 96,000 deliveries. Deliveries in the United States jumped 22 percent to more than 70,000 vehicles. In Germany, Porsche delivered 29,000 units, for a leap of 9 percent.
Next Porsche EV Is The 718 All-Electric
With the Taycan experiencing a huge success, Porsche is following it up with the all-electric Macan this year. But Porsche isn’t finished yet, as another EV will arrive in the middle of the decade -- the all-electric Porsche 718. Interestingly, the Porsche Mission R all-electric concept sits on a reworked chassis of the 718 Cayman.
