Here’s a bulletin: the Nissan 370Z is old. Specifically, it’s 12 years old and in today’s automotive arena, that’s an eternity. The fact that Nissan is still producing the car, despite sales having slowed to a trickle is a miracle all by itself. But sportscar and Z-car fans, fret no more. A new car is being developed as we speak, and from the rumors swirling around, it’s going to be spectacular.

Recreating an Icon

Having played second fiddle to the GTR in the Nissan sportscar hierarchy for so long, the Z is slated to step out of its big brother’s long shadow and restore the luster and cachet that the Z-moniker commanded for decades. However, this is much easier said than done and Nissan is walking a fine line trying to resurrect an iconic model yet again. There are no spy shots or close-to-accurate renderings of the new model yet, so our observations are based merely on educated conjecture and rumors.

It seems that Nissan is intent on paying homage to the classic 240Z, the forefather of the current and all future Z cars, with some front-end styling cues and headlights and grille treatment. The tail lights may also incorporate elements reminiscent of the 90’s vintage 300ZX. As for the profile, the car will likely retain the current car’s silhouette and hulking proportions.

Muscle Bound

The motivating mill for the next-gen Z is reportedly going to be a version of Infiniti’s twin-turbo V6 currently serving in the Q60 Red Sport model, in which it produces a robust 400hp. In 2018, Nissan produced a one off model dubbed the Project Clubsport 23 with this engine for the SEMA show, so that may have been a sign of things to come. Since that particular project raised hopes for the next-Z, we are cautiously optimistic that Nissan will be delivering the goods this time.

Worth the Wait?
