Nissan has taken the opportunity to unveil the Nissan Z for the Japanese market at the Tokyo Auto Salon. Not only that, but a special modified example with some retro design cues was in place at the show as well, alongside the prototype Nissan Z Proto. The event further emphasized why so many gearheads are looking forward to this JDM.

The Production Fairlady Z In Japan

The new Nissan Z will arrive in Japan as the Fairlady Z, carrying on the tradition of the Japanese versions of the Z cars carrying the Fairlady name. As it is across the rest of the world, the car is to be powered by the 3.0-liter twin-turbo VR30DDTT V6 engine that produces 400 hp.

The company also announced that Japanese customers for the car will have four variants of the Fairlady Z to choose from. These include the base Fairlady Z, and go upwards through the Version S, the Version ST and the Proto Spec, the only other version that Nissan revealed specs for.

The New Proto Spec Fairlady Z

The special Proto Spec version is going to be limited to just 240 units, and is a special version of the Fairlady Z that is inspired by the original prototype of the Fairlady Z that made its debut two years ago. The special edition Fairlady Z is finished in the iconic Squid Yellow we saw the prototype in, as well as coming with a Super Black roof and wing mirrors. Leather and suede make up the cabin, with special color stitching applied to the car's instrument panel. But Nissan hasn't stopped with the Nissan Z reveals just yet.

Alongside the regular Nissan Fairlady Z is a special, orange Nissan Z with some interesting retro cues. It’s a customized Z Proto, finished in a stunning orange, it has some stunning black accents, a split grille and unique wheels with tires that have white “Nissan Z” lettering across them.

The rear sees quite a unique exhaust setup and a two-tone lip spoiler, and all of these modifications look like they pay homage to the ultra-rare Fairlady Z3432R, one of the rarest and most valuable examples of the Fairlady ever created. It's highly likely this will just be a concept version of the Fairlady Z.
