Crime busting just turned electric, and we mean that in the literal sense of the automotive world. NYPD just admitted a sparklingly new electric recruit, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, as per the information given out by its official Twitter handle @NYPDnews.The NYPD’s foray into the electric world is just a part of its plan for a greener fleet and is worth applauding. A Silent Copper Patrolling Your Streets

NYPD’s finest will soon be riding in a new breed of patrol cars, the first of which is the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT. It’s capable of jetting 480 horses and 634 lb-ft of torque, running on twin permanent magnet synchronous motor power.

The range is 270 miles on a full charge, probably because of all the added weight (read weaponry) on a patrol car. While the exact bulletproof specifications are under wraps, NYPD's Mustang Mach-E GT has ballistic door panels and window inserts on both front doors. Plus, there are the usual decals, sirens, and lights mounted on.

Enough for some to question: “I wonder how much juice all the lights and laptop-type stuff will eat from the battery. I guess in a downtown setting it wouldn't matter too much but still.”

More Ford Mustang Mach-E GTs Will Join NYPD

This is not the sole Ford Mustang Mach-E GT to join the NYPD. As revealed at the New York International Auto Show at the Javits Center in Manhattan, another 99 will join in for a fleet of 100. According to ABC News, the electric patrol cars will hit the streets starting this summer.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul also announced that ten fast chargers are coming up at LaGuardia Airport. They will be able to charge compatible EVs in less than 30 minutes. The chargers are a part of NYPA's EVolve NY fast-charging network, which aims to erect a hundred high-speed charging stations across the state to make it easier for all to move to green.

But concerned citizens have some valid questions. For instance, one Instagram user wanted to know, “but is it going to catch the SRTs and Hellcats?”

Another was all praise, “Not a Mustang fan but good-looking NYPD car. Stay safe, and thank you for the job you do.”

It’s a great step by the authorities and hopefully, by going electric, they may just lead by example, making NYC move to a greener plane.
