The world of off-roading is an exciting and fascinating one, not only for pure motorists but for those who love being outdoors, in nature. There's room for a wide array of enthusiasts in this car culture, whether it's because you love modifying your SUV or off-roader, after a day on the trail you love a day in the garage just as much, if not more; whether it's because you love the places an off-road vehicle can take you, the adventure, the solitude, the breathtaking views and fresh air, and you could care less about exactly what kind of off-roader you have. In either case, off-roading is a passion for these people.

There is an art to going off-road, and a science. It takes technique, practice, discernment, and navigational skill, above many other things. It's highly recommended to take an off-roading class if you have never been off-road and want to get out on the trails. Not everyone does this though. A lot of people like to think that off-roading is easy, simple, that if you just floor it or drive hard your car will handle the rest. That just isn't the case. Sometimes you don't need any power to get through a problem, but rather a discerning choice of the right path. But, not everyone knows this or thinks this way, and many get stuck, hopelessly so, regardless of the vehicle's off-road capabilities. Let's take a look at 25 off-roaders that never should've gotten stuck, but did anyway.

25 Deep Muddy Sand

via twitter.com

This car didn't think things through when they decided to drive through the deep sandy mud that is characteristic of a lot of beaches at low tide. It's a difficult task to drive a car through terrain like this, the likes of which almost any off-roader would have some serious trouble navigating.

The wheels are sunk in pretty deep, though not completely buried, as commonly happens in dry sand.

But, this kind of mud is a lot harder to get out of, and to stay out of, unlike sand. Definitely stuck, this car is!

24 Muddy Traffic Jam

via wwf.org.my

This front car is clearly an off-roader that is designed and equipped to take on virtually anything that can be thrown at it. But, no matter how advanced your car is, no matter how capable it is for taking on the woes of off-roading, there will be a time when it gets stuck. It's inevitable, it will happen, but half of off-roading is being well prepared for that scenario, and having the proper mods to be able to get out of that scenario.

This mud is a bit deeper than anticipated, so the driver merely needs to pull his way out of this particularly thick spot.

23 Sandy Bottom (Out)

via si.com

This truck is a pretty insane beast, designed to take on a lot of terrain while also still being able to go fast. It's minimally adapted for serious trail going, more about taking on the rough terrain, not the technical. It has upgraded suspension, skid plate, snorkel, and big tires to take on the rough terrain. But, any car can get bottomed out, and this one has done just that, with a dip too steep to handle, only compounded by the soft sand at the bottom. Nothing a little push can't get you out of!

22 Not A Good Idea

via reddit.com

As the "redditors" where this picture was posted were keen to point out, this particular off-roader has done something that isn't very smart, going into a construction site to "have some fun," by destroying any progress made by the workers.

This gives off-roaders and Jeep owners a bad name across the nation, and this kind of behavior is really a shame.

It's probably a good thing that they got stuck because at least now they'll have learned their lesson. Hopefully, that's the case, anyway. The mud here was just a little bit too thick for this off-roader to handle.

21 S"truck" In The Sand

via ram1500diesel.com

While most pickup trucks these days are in fact four-wheel drive, that doesn't instantly make them adequate for off-roading immediately. They don't have the best weight or power ratios, and they need a fair amount of modification to be ready for serious off-roading. But, something like a simple beach drive is cake for this truck to handle, yet they find themselves stuck, probably because they either didn't engage four-wheel drive or merely didn't lower their tires before attempting to drive on soft sand.

Sometimes that's the one, simple, and vital thing that makes the difference.

20 Poor Navigation

via practicalmotoring.com.au

I hate to say this, but there really is no reason this car is stuck, besides a very poor decision of route. I haven't seen the terrain in person, obviously, but from what I can see, I'd wager I would be able to get my Mazda 2 through this muddy, rutted area with a little bit of forethought and some careful driving.

Angling your car sideways to this extreme degree is clearly wrong, where the tires can sink down far enough to bottom out. This is a good example as to why a class in off-roading is always a good idea.

19 Poor Choices

via pinterest.com

There's a lot happening in this picture, and a story before and after that we just don't get a bearing on from this one singular snap.

But, it's clear that this Jeep, while modified well and perfectly capable in most off-road terrain, has still managed to find itself in a rather compromised position.

I'm not sure if they were just being thoughtless and found themselves too close to the muddy riverbank, or if they were attempting a full river crossing. I have doubts about the latter, as there is no snorkel and that river would be a serious undertaking.

18 Dried River Bed Hazards

via pinterest.com

A dried riverbed is a tricky place to drive a car. The mud, sink zones, and other hazards all add up to create a very dangerous environment to drive in. This off-roader has learned that the hard way, perhaps only trying to get across the river to the sand dunes and playland of fun waiting there, taunting.

Either way, it looks like they've set up shop there for a while, with drinks on the bumper, jacket on the roof, and a shovel and gloves to dig out all the mud around the car. Maybe they'll get to the sand dunes another day.

17 Too Close To The Waves

via offroadforever.com

If there ever was a good spot to get stuck while off-roading, this is definitely a pretty good one, with green forest on the one side and a beautiful blue ocean on the other. Although, that's not to say that digging your back wheels into wet sand is at any point a fun way to spend your time.

This off-road truck is well equipped to take on quite a bit of terrain, with a snorkel, brush guard, skid plate, and extra equipment. That and he's with a team, one of the most useful things you can bring with you off-roading.

16 If The Hood Is Open, It Can't Be Good

via myfjcruiser.org

I don't really know how this FJ Cruiser got into the position that it did, but this scenario isn't good, in fact, it looks pretty bad.

Not only has the car gotten itself stuck, but it's done so on quite a steep angle, and while it's likely not in danger of tipping over, it's possible that the engine is in danger of flooding, especially setting in such an extreme position for such a long time.

The front wheel is almost entirely buried in mud, which will make things difficult. Hopefully he has tow straps and a team with him, and hopefully, he can get his engine going again.

15 Old Is Better Than The New

via motortrend.ca

It looks like a classic case of the old being better than the new, with this brand new prototype Range Rover Discovery finding itself stuck in the shoulder of a four wheel drive track, while an older model stands tall, proud, and not stuck right next to it. It's also a good example, like many of these, of what kind of line not to take through an off-road track.

The shoulder is seriously rutted, which only increases your risks of digging in and getting stuck on your undercarriage. Best to steer clear of those kinds of areas.

14 Snow Driving Hazards

via libreshot.com

This picture of a group of off-roaders from Mongolia has found themselves in a bit of a sticky situation, and a cold one, too.

Their car has been bogged down by too much snow and not enough traction.

There could be any number of reasons behind the issue, whether the snow is too deep, the tires aren't low enough, or the ground underneath is too soft. Any combination of those things could lead to a situation such as this one. Luckily, with some skill, getting out of this doesn't look too difficult.

13 I Spy Three Stuck Vehicles

via keighleynews.co.uk

This looks like a train wreck of an afternoon spent off-roading. These cars are stuck in a big way. For as far as can be seen, it's just the same terrain: thick mud, deep water, completely impassable terrain.

This is the kind of off-road area that best be entirely avoided, because it's just not fun, and it's almost impossible to traverse, in any off-road vehicle.

The Jeep had the right idea, kind of, but found that the mud was just too deep for even just half of his car. The third car almost on the horizon is sideways, too, no doubt hopelessly buried in bogs.

12 Even Military Vehicles Can Get Stuck

via jqpublicblog.com

This military vehicle took the wrong side of the road to drive on, clearly evident by the deep pit of mud they are stuck in, versus the mild and almost dry stretch just next to them. Mud is one of the trickiest and most frustrating kinds of terrain to drive in as an off-roader because it's often times very hard to know exactly how deep it is, or how sticky, or how slippery.

It takes a lot of judgment, and above all else, some thinking ahead and if possible, avoidance of any suspect areas.

11 Hiding In The Bushes

via izhardakar.wp.com

This is a seriously capable off-roading machine. It really, genuinely is, and the fact that this driver got it stuck in the shoulder of a road is rather silly. This is one of the best examples of an off-roader that never should have gotten stuck but did anyway. With a featherweight body, powerful engine and drivetrain, massive tires and incredible suspension, this off-roader is the kind of machine that can take on just about anything.

Except, of course, for poor driving skills. But, everyone makes mistakes, and this man is clearly a professional off-roader.

10 Bikes Get Stuck, Too

Via Imgur.com

It might be a little surprising to see a bike on this list, but it is all about off-roaders, and dirt bikes are specifically designed for off-road riding. They have knobby tires, different gears, and a different engine to handle the different stresses of off-roading. But, like any off-roader, mud is the great equalizer. This biker tried to head straight through the thick of it, impatient. Perhaps he could have found a better line, perhaps he should have walked his bike along the edge of the trail, avoiding the mud entirely.

The nice thing about a bike is it's a lot easier to retrieve.

9 Driving Through A Lake

via hernandosun.com

The hardest part about a puddle in the road is that you can never really know how deep it is beforehand. Which is why avoiding a massive pit like this one would be a very good idea. Just because the middle of the road goes through the puddle, doesn't mean you should go that way. Off-roading is all about not following a road, so why not get creative and take a different route?

There's plenty of room to skirt along the edge of the puddle, especially on the passenger side of the road. You might still get stuck, but your chances are a lot less.

8 Poorly Prepared For This

via fs.usdsa.gov

This SUV has made quite the mess of this field in its sad, pitiful attempt to get out of its resting place.

The more the car struggled, the more it made more mud, the deeper it got, and the harder everything became.

And at the time of this picture, the car and the trailer is most assuredly stuck. Maybe it rained while the car was parked there on a camping trip, and then they couldn't leave. Or maybe they just found an especially wet spot as they drove nowhere near a road or trail. I guess they just don't have any respect for the wilderness.

7 Don't Drive On River Ice

via frontiersman.com

It doesn't take much common sense to know that driving on a river is a really bad idea, especially when the ice looks like this. There's a reason you'll only see cars driving on frozen lakes, because there are fewer variables and variations in the thickness of the ice, mostly due to the fact that the water isn't constantly flowing, even with ice on top of it.

It's a pretty big risk in most places to even walk on a river, let alone attempt to drive your truck across it.

It didn't stop this person from trying, though, and the end result was this.

6 Stay On The Trail

via fordauthority.com

This suped-up Ford F-150 no doubt does excellently in off-road terrain, with beefier tires and a modest lift kit, there's not much reason for a machine like this to get stuck. That is, of course, unless you forget to keep it on the path, and drive it down a steep decline and almost into a tree, where you can't really get back out because of the slope and the mud.

Not the smartest decision. It's a good idea to pay attention to your trajectory and path when off-roading.
