Mecum Auctions is one of the best auction houses in the world. Their auctions always throw up surprises, and some truly fascinating classic cars. And some of the cars that come up are some of the most special in the world. This one that is part of their Monterey 2022 auction in August is very special. It is a 1965 Shelby Factory Stage III 289 Cobra Dragonsnake, one of just five examples ever made and the only one that was a Stage III.

Some details on this car are truly fascinating. The Stage III system is the quadruple-Weber carburetor system, and this car was initially purchased by Don Reimer of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. With his younger brother Mike, he took delivery of the car in August 1964. And it’s bright yellow paint was specially ordered to match the Reimer brothers’ Thunderbird tow vehicle. And the car did indeed go racing, competing in the A/Modified and AA/Modified Production Racing classes with great success, and its third owner road raced the car, competing in various SCAA events.

This amazing car has had various owners throughout its lifespan. It ended up in Canada at one point, and then came back to the United States a few years later. The car itself was then sold for $190,000 in January 2001 and would soon pass into the hands of restorer and collector Steven Juliano in 2007. The car has had some time on the historic racing circuit, but has recently spent time inside Juliano’s private museum. Its 289 cubic-inch Stage III engine is still at work with its Weber carbs, and it has a four-speed manual transmission to go with it.

This remarkable car will come highly documented regarding its past, with a full list of its known ownership history since it was new. It is still presented in that iconic yellow that matched the Thunderbird two car of the Reimer brothers, and the Mecum listing states that the car is one of the finest and most accurately restored factory-built Dragonsnakes in existence. The car took the Division 1 Premiere Award at SAAC-34 in August 2009, and that was the highest points score in SAAC judging history to that point. This is an amazing opportunity to own a truly special Shelby Cobra.
