A lot of people have been stuck indoors for a very long time now. The frustration comes out in different ways, some even get political. We are not interested in politics, but we are interested in cars! So, what are the best vehicles to help us enjoy the new normal?
Overlanding Vehicles present themselves as the solution to our need for something that can get us out of our homes and as far away from other people as possible. It might sound extreme, but what better way is there to vent our frustrations than first going off-road for a few hours then set up camp somewhere social distancing hasn’t been invented yet.
10 Avtoros Shaman
The Avtoros is a ready-made post-apocalyptic tank of a vehicle. It can either seat 8 passengers and a driver, or sleep four depending on your needs.
It is powered by a 146 horsepower Iveco diesel engine and tops out at around 44 mph, but the thing is water-tight, and they will even sell you a propeller separately as an option if you plan on doing river crossings!
9 EarthCruiser EXP Overlander
Effectively the EarthCruiser is an off-road RV, with all the basic amenities onboard!
Based on a Mitsubishi Fuso 4x4, it comes with a Vortec V8 with more than enough power to move the beast around and enough ground clearance to clear any obstacle. It is really a way of moving your home to any part of the world, no matter how far-flung.
8 Jeep Gladiator Farout
A far more simple approach to overlanding, the Farout concept is a great way to motivate an already vast Jeep aftermarket community.
It takes the super-capable Gladiator and gets it ready for those weekend away trips that might go on longer than expected, adding a camper shell, rooftop tent, and all the storage you will need. This is one for the off-road enthusiast!
7 Gentex Chevrolet Colorado
Gentex is able to offer this Michigan themed Colorado with a solar-powered roof-mounted tent controlled by their special HomeLink system. Some serious tech in a comparatively small truck, it really can be something you spend a lot of time in.
With this kind of feature you will be able to power all your basic tech necessities even if you are hundreds of miles away from civilization, and likely cellular service.
6 Hellwig Performance Ford Ranger Overlander
With literally everything including the kitchen (let alone the sink) thrown in, this is one for the serious enthusiasts. Being based on the more nimble Ranger platform it will have a much smaller footprint than some of the other more comfortable overlanders, but lacks nothing.
Hellwig does a great job, it isn’t cheap but every part is pure quality.
5 Land Rover Defender Icarus
This is for the adventurer with more emphasis on the getting there part than the actual staying there part, built on one of the most capable (not reliable) 4x4s ever built.
It offers a neatly integrated rooftop tent with basic camping needs all catered for, although it must be said it will be cramped if there are more than two of you.
4 Mercedes-Benz Zetros 2733
OK, so this is a house on wheels. This is not so much for social distancing as it is for those ready to give up on society and retire off the grid. Spacious enough for the whole family, it has an outdoor rain-shower and an ATV garage.
The 7.2-liter diesel produces 958 foot-pounds of torque, enough to keep your house on wheels moving through just about anything.
3 UNICAT TerraCross
The TerraCross comes with both exceptional power generation capabilities, water filtration, and a list of other options.
This is targeted at people and businesses setting up mobile command centers in the most remote areas of the world, it would be easy to take this to your favorite beauty spot and literally live there.
2 GXV Safari Extreme
This particular version in GXVs extensive range has it all. It still has a small enough footprint to do some off-roading but big enough to accommodate a small family for a very long time.
With options like the off-road bumper and winch, it will even be able to get unstuck if it ever happens to get stuck!
1 Sportsmobile Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 4X4
One of the more compact overlanders is also one of the best. Based on the Sprinter platform, at a glance, it looks like a regular van, but on the inside things change quite a bit; from luxurious beds to a Porta Potti, it can really have whatever you want.
It is a more compact living area, but if you are interested in joining the van-life trend then this should be number one on your list.
