How The 1994 Cobra Pace Car Edition Came To Life
It was 1964 when Ford unveiled the Mustang. Impressed, Tony Hulman (owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway) and Indianapolis 500 race officials tagged the new pony car as the Official Pace Car of the 1964 Indy 500.
In 1994, Ford released the fourth-generation Mustang, which was then designated as that year’s Official Pace Car, with 1963 Indy 500 champ Parnelli Jones behind the wheels. As per tradition, the 1994 Mustang pace car was replicated a thousand times into the 1994 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra Pace Car Edition.

The 1994 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra Pace Car Edition was made available to the public with an exterior finished in Rio Red color, Saddle convertible top, and a Saddle leather interior. It features the Cobra option package, which adds elements such as a special front fascia, reflector headlights and round fog lights, as well as a distinct rear spoiler with integrated third brake light and bright Cobra emblems.
Donning the Ford Blue Oval badge on the rear valence and the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway emblem on the front seatbacks, the Mustang SVT Cobra Pace Car Edition rode on SVT 7x18-inch cast aluminum 5-spoke wheels shod with P255/45ZR17 Goodyear Eagle GS-C tires.
Ford ensured that the 1994 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra Pace Car Edition offers increase performance by upgrading the Cobra’s 5.0L V-8 mill from 215 hp to 240 hp. Ford also installed 13-inch front disc brakes with Cobra calipers and a slew of other performance enhancements.
Parnelli Also Owns A Mustang Pace Car Edition
All 1994 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra Pace Car Editions were fully optioned with features such as air conditioning, front disc brakes, power steering and cruise control, as well as power windows, locks and top, Cobra floor mats and even CD stereo.
Parnelli was able to purchase one of these Pace Car Editions, which is now the part of the bidding lineup at the current sale at Mecum Auctions.
