Mercedes-Benz has been an innovator and boundary-pushing car manufacturer since its very foundation. A luxury car manufacturer since the inception of the automobile, the three-pointed star has become an attainable goal for many road users today.

The Mercedes-Benz V8 engines are likely one of the best all-around engines ever, and through the years the Mercedes-Benz brand has developed an array of silky smooth and powerful performance V8's for the likes of their S-class and 63 series models. But, with the help of their AMG partners, they have created one of the best V8's the world has ever seen.

With an amazing exhaust note and the performance to match, the AMG 6.3-liter V8 is one of the all-time greats. However, the change to electric motors and the bid goodbye to their famous V8 is not coming as soon as we expected with AMG's boss saying they could last up to another 10 years.

The AMG V8 Is Here To Stay (For A Little Longer)

It's safe to say AMG is in a bit of a trouble spot at the minute, with some of its V8's having quality control issues in some of their US cars, according to the man in charge of Mercedes' performance division. The big man at AMG, Philipp Scheimer does have some good news to share as he believes the twin-turbo 4.0-liter still has plenty of life left in it despite its parent company Daimlers direction of moving away from internal combustion engines to prepare for the ever-looming EV era.

In a recent interview conducted by another automotive outlet, when asked about the fate of the big and burly V8, AMG's head said:

"I think there will be a future, yes. I think for the next ten years we will see V8s, for sure. We have a lot of customers who love their cars and I still think that we will see those people buying the cars for a long time. We have really a very high demand all over the world"

Despite all this, AMG won't be developing a next-generation V8, since that ship has sailed due to electrification taking over. The engineers are still working on finding ways to update and modernize the existing power unit. As well as this, their combustion engine is being updated in order to become a central part of their new plug-in hybrid setup, as showcased in the launch of the new GT 63 S E-Performance. The internal combustion unit works alongside a rear electric motor to develop a total output of 831HP and 1,033 LB-FT of torque, thus technically making it the most powerful AMG car to date. We won't count the AMG One hypercar quite yet as it has not been revealed in production form.

While the V8 is here to stay, it seems right to assume that only the top-tier AMGs will continue to use it. In fact, the next-generation C63 is already set to lose the 4.0-liter unit in favor of a much-electrified four-cylinder heavily adapted from the AMG45 model range. The big boy E63 could be next in line to lose some cylinders, but there is no word on a next-gen powertrain for the AMG M5 Rival.

Mercedes has firmly expressed its interest in going completely electric by the end of the decade, at least in markets in which it makes sense for them due to extensive new legislation prohibiting ICE sales. AMG has already had a shot at the EV market with the EQS 53, as well as the smaller EQE 53 not far behind seeing as prototypes have already been spied during testing.

On a more positive, petrol infused note, we should look back at some of the great cars that Mercedes-AMG has produced using this great engine, and if they're anything to go by we still expect a tribute send off to pay homage to some of the cars which have been powered by their V8 lump. However, his is not to say that the German marque will lose its appeal once they electrify, we believe that they could be one of the innovators for a new style of electric motor that would emulate how it feels to drive one of their V8's.

Probably the most infamous and recognizable V8-powered AMG is the C63. As a rival to the BMW M3/4, what the C63 had over its german rival, was that it was powered by a brutal, unfiltered, and raw 6.3litre V8. The sound is the real talking point, and if you've ever heard one before you'll be sure to hear one from miles away. The iconic "V8 Bi-Turbo" badge has long since become a subtle way of telling a passer-by that the Mercedes wearing it means business.

The AMG V8 has also been used to power some of AMG's most successful sports cars such as the AMG GT-Black series, a car that broke the Nurburgring road production car lap record. This seems to be the theme with AMG, they have come up with something special, a V8 engine that can be adapted to suit many different styles of cars with some tuning and setup alterations. The phrase if it ain't broke don't fix it comes to mind when we talk about this legendary powertrain, and although it is due to part ways soon, we're just glad it can stick around for a little longer.
