On March 6, this 1976 Porsche 934 race car will hit the auction block on the beaches of Amelia Island. The stunning India Red vehicle is likely to catch an impressive sum with estimates pointing towards a sale price of up to $1.6 million. The vehicle will be on sale at Gooding & Company's Amelia Island auction.
The 934
The 934 is the racing-bred sibling of Porsche’s 930 Turbo. It debuted alongside the 935 as part of the German automaker’s entry into GT-class racing to go along with its prototype racing efforts. It resembles the 911 Turbo, but features racing oriented aerodynamic components, 917-sourced disc brakes, center-lock BBS wheels, a full roll cage, and a turbocharged flat-six that can reach 485 horsepower.
This Version
The India Red version that is going on sale at Amelia Island is the first of 31 934s that were built and sold to racing teams in 1976. It was the exact vehicle Porsche choose to display during their press preview in Weissach, Germany. The vehicle made its racing debut at Kannacher GT Racing in the Deutsche Rennsport-Meisterchaft series and would reach a variety of podiums during its career on the DRM and European GT Racing circuits. The vehicle’s final race was in 1979 at 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it finished third in class and 19th overall.
Since Retirement
The car has been in the hands of multiple owners since its retirement in 1979. However, the car rarely left the garage and only appeared at a few classic car shows over the years. In 2003, the vehicle received a complete restoration, which brought it back to the standards expected by Porsche collectors. At Amelia Island, the car is expected to grab between $1.25 and $1.6 million.
