You ever wake up and get excited in the morning because you saw some good news that will make your day and you can go right back to bed? That is exactly how I feel as a car journalist right now as I came across this patent of what appears to be a mid-engine Porsche with gullwing doors. We have no details at all visual confirmation so let's speculate on this possible upcoming Porsche a little bit.

A Porsche With Gullwing Doors: Let The Speculation Begin

Porsche Gullwing Leaked
EUIPO

Porsche has never officially produced a car with gullwing doors. A vehicle that's closest to meeting that is the 906 Carrera 6 of the mid-Sixties, a street-legal homologated race car produced so Porsche could race in the Group 4 racing series along with other sports cars. Could the Gullwing be connected to a homologation of a forthcoming race car? Or is it a limited-edition variant of the 718 Cayman?

Or is it a dedicated entry-level mini supercar designed to take on the Alpine A110? We hope it's not the latter because that raises the possibility that it won't come to North America. So let's not go down that route.

Mid-Engine Goodness

If it is based on the 718 to some degree, we hope it derives from the best mid-engine sports car of them all. That would be the GTS 4.0 with the four-liter flat-six available with the six-speed transmission. The naturally-aspirated flat-six made a return to the GTS as a response to backlash that Porsche people didn't want to pay Porsche premiums for a turbocharged four-cylinder for close to a hundred grand.

If the Gullwing is a direct result of Porsche listening to what people want, we hope it continues right to the day when EVs become mainstream and the dinosaur oil is no longer in high demand. In the meantime, we'll keep you posted as more details come to light about the mysterious German gullwinger.
