The Porsche 911 is one of the most iconic cars in the Stuttgart company’s lineup. In fact, it's probably Porsche’s most well known car. But as an internal-combustion engine powered sports car, it's perhaps no surprise to learn that times are changing. In 2021, potentially signifying the way we will all buy cars, the 911 was outsold by Porsche’s electric Taycan, as the company itself delivered over 300,000 vehicles worldwide in fiscal year 2021.

The Doubling Of Taycan Deliveries

One of the headlines from Porsche’s sales figures is how many Taycans the company sold. Porsche have said that the Taycan saw an outstanding increase in sales, with a total 41,296 units sold in 2021. That is more than double the amount of deliveries of the car seen in 2020. Not only that, but it's nearly 3,000 more units sold than the iconic 911. The 911 sports car saw 38,464 deliveries in 2021. To show just how well the Taycan sold, the Panamera saw some 30,220 deliveries last year, while the 718 Boxster and the 718 Cayman saw 20,502 customers take delivery of the cars.

When it comes to the most popular Porsche products of 2021 though, no other car in the lineup came close to the Macan and the Cayenne. The Macan was the best-selling Porsche car of the year, with 88, 362 units sold and delivered to their new owners. The Cayenne was not that far behind either, with 83,071 examples of the SUV sold to Porsche customers. These are impressive figures when we consider the challenges faced by the global semiconductor shortage, and of course the continued impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Porsche’s Worldwide Demand Remains Strong

Despite the disruption the pandemic has caused, Porsche is still in demand worldwide. Indeed, its growth has been incredibly strong over the past year. The United States saw some 22% more vehicles delivered than in 2020. Porsche says that 70,025 US customers bought a model from the company’s extensive product range. But it was China that is still the largest single market for Porsche. China saw an increase of 8% in sales over the already record year of 2020. This means 95,671 vehicles delivered to Chinese customers, a big achievement for Porsche given the supply issues that have been hurting the globe over the past couple of years.
