The Porsche Taycan which was first revealed in 2020, has become the poster child of Porsche's EV lineup. Earlier this year, Porsche sent out an over-the-air (OTA) update that boosted the Taycan's range and charging speed. But it doesn't stop there. As if they hadn't already reduced charging times significantly, it only gets better.

Porsche has revealed a new charger, that will cut down charging times for Taycan owners quite significantly. The new onboard 19.2 kW capable charging module allows Porsche Taycan owners to draw power in nearly half the time they could previously. This new charger can be retrofitted to even older models of the Taycan.

Porsche made it official after making a statement on their press release. The all-new 19.2 kW on-board charging module lets you charge your Porsche in half the time it used to take. Porsche claims that the onboard charger cuts 0–100% charging times for your all-electric Porsche Taycan featuring Performance Batteries to 4.8 hours, down from 9.5 hours when compared to the original charger. Porsche Taycan with Performance Battery Plus will be able to charge from 0 to 100% in 5.3 hours, as compared to 10.5 hours with the previous onboard charger. New Porsche customers can now choose this new 19.2 kW on-board charging module in Porsche's configurator while making their order for their brand-new Porsche Taycan.

Porsche claims this innovative on-board module allows the Taycan to receive twice as much power as before. Regardless, a home wall charger is still required.

The Porsche Taycan originally had a lower range than it does now. Earlier this year, an update increased the Taycan's range by approximately 31 miles, along with many other features to keep the Porsche Taycan up to industry standards. Not only that, but the update also helped the Porsche Taycan charge a little quicker than it did. The Porsche Taycan already has a modest battery that lets it churn out about 200–250 miles of range. These are small numbers, since the Tesla Model S hovers around 400 miles of range.

But since then, Porsche has come a long way in trying to improve the Porsche Taycan's ability to stay on the road. The good news about this new on-board charger is that Porsche will retrofit it into your older Porsche Taycan for a measly $1850.15 (excluding tax). All you have to do is drive your Porsche Taycan to a certified Porsche dealer, leave your Taycan there for about 12 hours, and voilà. Sure, it might cost more than just $1850.15, and you'll have to live without your Porsche Taycan for a day, but, in the end, it's worth it. At least, you now have a Porsche that takes around 5 hours to fully recharge instead.

This new on-board charging module, which is located behind the front trunk, replaces the existing on-board charger and the corresponding wiring that came with the car. This demonstration is for your knowledge only. Porsche does not really think you should be doing this yourself.

The Wall Charger Connect Is A Touch Screen Charger For Your Taycan

The on-board charger goes inside your car. But to actually take full advantage of this high speed 19.2 kW charging, Porsche includes an additional AC, level-2 charger. They call this the Wall Charger Connect, listed on their website for $1,586 (excluding tax).

It's a new and shiny charging box that mounts on your home wall, or on a charging stand. This wall charger for the Porsche Taycan allows 19.2 kW of current to pass through to the Porsche Taycan. Which is now capable of receiving that, thanks to the new on-board charging module—once you've got it installed at a certified Porsche dealer.

The Wall Charger Connect is currently the best charging solution Porsche provides for the Porsche Taycan. They have given this charger a black finish and a 5-inch touchscreen that shows you all the information concerning the Porsche Taycan's charging status. The Porsche Taycan Wall Charger Connect features Wi-Fi connectivity for over-the-air software updates as well as power-line connectivity, all of which seamlessly integrate and keep the Wall Charger Connect synchronized with your Porsche ecosystem.

Porsche recommends that the installation of this all-new Wall Charger Connect be done by a professionally certified electrician, who will then need to hard-wire it directly to a 100-amp circuit. If no electrician is available, Porsche recommends Qmerit, who are certified to install the Porsche Taycan Wall Charger Connect.

Porsche Taycan Continues Striving To Be Better Than A Tesla

Porsche is working hard to keep betting on the Taycan and putting it on the EV map. The manufacturer wants to rid people of their skepticism about the Porsche Taycan when it comes to comparing it with Tesla. Specifically, the Tesla Model S. But that does not stop Porsche from continuing to send over-the-air (OTA) updates to the Taycan, releasing range or feature updates.

The 19.2 kW on-board charger, along with the Wall Charger Connect, aren't without a some disappointment. Since, not everyone has a 100 amp electrical panel at their homes for them to take advantage of the high charging speeds. People who do have the ability to install this charger, should find it a welcomed upgrade for their Porsche Taycan.
