We would really love to see a Porsche Taycan and a Tesla Model S go head-to-head, especially on the highway. Both are highly dynamic electric sedans trying to outdo each other. To our delight, a Taycan did try to outpace a Model S on the high-speed Autobahn and the contest was recorded on tape for all to see.

3 Tale Of The Tape

The contestants in this short video uploaded on YouTube by Maxime Fontanier are a Porsche Taycan Turbo S and a Tesla Model S P100D. On paper, the Model S is more powerful at 760 hp of max output and 722 lb.-ft. of torque. Its rival, the Taycan Turbo S, comes with up to 751 hp of output and up to 774 lb-ft of torque.

Before we present the result of the contest, we would like to note that high levels of speed are allowed on some stretches of the Autobahn, which means overspeeding wouldn’t be an issue here. Of course, we wouldn’t want anyone to get ticketed after being seen on video. What we really want is to see whether the Porsche Taycan can beat the Tesla Model S, or the other way around.

2 And The Winner Is?

The 28-second video shows how the Porsche Taycan Turbo S was chasing the Tesla Model S for a few minutes. Whether the Tesla driver knows that a contest was going on, we don’t know. What we do know is that there were instances that the Model S was seemingly pulling away or the Taycan gaining on its rival. Its odometer shows the Taycan was already going as fast as 155 mph (250 km/h)!

Nonetheless, it was really a high-speed chase that had no clear conclusion. Before the Taycan had a real chance of closing in, its driver was already wary of the warning that the EV needed to stop to recharge its batteries. At end of the video, the Taycan only had around 18 miles (29 km) of range.

1 Debate Goes On

The video only made the Tesla-vs.-Porsche debate much livelier. Obviously, Porsche fans said the Taycan – with its greater top speed -- would have been able to overtake the Model S if it had range left. On the other hand, Tesla fans commented the Taycan can’t keep up with the Model S for long periods of time, or distance.

Next time, we should pit a Taycan against a comparable Model S -- both fully charged -- on the Autobahn. No more excuses.
