Quarter-mile drag racing is all about traction, power, and your reaction time when the lights turn green. It’s also about having fun, racing your ride and finding out who is the king of the strip. Drag strips often have “Fun Racing” days and street car racing days as a means to open the doors to anyone who wants to try drag racing in a safer environment than on the street.

Many parts of the country struggle to keep racers off the streets where they are a danger to themselves and other motorists. Police departments across the country often participate in Fun Racing at the local drag strip to engage with racers and provide them with a safe way to test their cars.

In the video below we see a local police officer take his Ford Explorer Interceptor to the strip and go up against a Quad bike. The results are a bit surprising.

Ford Police Interceptor Vs. Quad Bike Drag Race

The 'Wheels' YouTube channel video offers no real description about the challengers in this unlikely drag race. But what we can be sure of is that the cop car is a Ford Explorer Police Interceptor, or as Ford calls it, the Ford Police Interceptor Utility (FPIU).

The modified-for-duty Explorer keeps the all-wheel-drive system and is powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 which punches out 400-hp. According to Ford, that’s enough to get the FPIU to 60 mph from a standstill in 5.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 148 mph. That’s nothing to laugh at and those numbers make it quicker than the Dodge Charger Pursuit sedan.

As for the Quad bike, there’s no information in the video about the make, model, or if it has been modified in any significant way. We suspect that some eagle-eyed viewers might be able to identify the cop cars’ foe.

Quad bikes typically call off-road trails their home, but their relative light weight and punchy motorcycle-derived engines make them great platforms for fast and fun drag strip runners.

Both the cop car and the quad bike get off the line well and appear to be level all the way down the strip. But when they cross the line, the diminutive quad just edges the big Ford to take the win.

The quad manages a 15.890 second quarter mile time at 71.30 mph while the fuzz, in hot pursuit, crosses the line in 16.003 seconds at 87.31 mph. The time and speed difference paint the real picture, suggesting that the quad gets off the line quicker while the FPIU makes up time further down the strip.

All of this was in good fun and it’s interesting to see two unlikely challengers take each other on at the drag strip.
