At the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, Toyota unveiled the GT4 in concept form. The production model followed in October of the same year. Sales began in March of the following year, and since then, the manufacturer has had a big success from the GT4, selling more than 50 units around the world, and resulting in more than 100 platform results and 50 class victories throughout 11 national and international GT4 competitions.

And to commemorate the racecar’s 50th win, the Japanese brand also created the unique GR Supra GT4 "50 Edition". However, given the fierce competition in the well-liked GT4 class, Toyota Gazoo Racing has continued to develop the GR Supra GT4 with an EVO update for the upcoming season, ensuring that racers can continue achieving top scores, carrying on from the predecessors.

Following the much-needed addition of a manual transmission to the road-going, six-cylinder Supra, Toyota's Gazoo Racing subsidiary made considerable improvements to the Supra GT4 in preparation for the 2023 season. The manufacturer developed the coupe's brakes, steering, and engine using considerable feedback from race car drivers and mechanics to maintain the Supra competitive against its key rivals.

The GT4 EVO will make its racing debut at the 24 Hours of Daytona weekend in January 2023, as well as the first round of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge season. Toyota stated that the new GR Supra GT4 EVO is already available. In GT4-class races, the GR Supra competes against similarly modified versions of the BMW M4, Porsche Cayman, and McLaren Artura. The race car costs around $185,350, though the existing GR Supra GT4 could easily update to the new EVO requirements.

Thanks to first-hand customer and driver feedback, the GR Supra GT4 EVO is perfect for both amateur and expert drivers. Let’s have a look at why you should buy the Toyota GR Supra GT4.

Since the car's debut, Toyota Gazoo Racing engineers continue to provide support to its customer teams and drivers on the track at various events. So, when intending to develop the Supra GT4, they went to these drivers and teams, who supplied insightful comments.

Under the hood, the Supra GT4 Evo comes equipped with a 3.0-liter, In-line six-cylinder, single twin-scroll turbocharged engine, just like the road-going Supra, but with some substantial improvements. The racer's engine comes with a new Marelli ECU, and the driveline has a new Drexler Motorsport spec limited-slip differential.

Along with the revised driveline, the engine breathes through Akrapovic racing exhaust system with a catalytic converter and a reworked ZF automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Power goes to the rear wheels via the modified eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.

Besides giving the engine a better cooling system, Toyota said the upgraded engine's torque increases to about 487 pound-feet, but the brand did not specify how much power it produces. The road-legal Supra, for comparison’s sake, makes 335 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque, so expect the racing variant to make much more horsepower. According to Toyota, the increased power and revised torque curve will let drivers push the car harder for faster lap times.

The street-legal, regular-production vehicle is further distinguished from the fleet by a track-specific body package that prominently incorporates a wider rear wing, giving it a more appealing look.

While the powertrain and other changes are the focus of attention, Toyota also revised the handling as well. The 2023 Supra GT4 Evo also comes with revised Brembo-sourced brakes, a recalibrated ABS system, and the latest-generation adjustable dampers developed by German firm KW Automotive. Improving the braking system are the dedicated brake calipers specifically designed for racing. There are a pair of four-pot brake calipers in the GT4 EVO's rear and six-pot Brembo calipers up front.

A lot of standard amenities are available, including the traction control, a digital instrument cluster, the ABS, and the Data logger. Suspension travel sensors are available as an option, along with the tire pressure monitoring system and the Rear view camera. The customized multifunction steering wheel keeps all the necessary functions, and an 8-inch touchscreen in the carbon-fiber dashboard displays all pertinent information.

Additionally, Toyota also added a new anti-roll bar to the race car's 2023 specification to improve stability when cornering at high speeds. All of this should make the new GR Supra GT4 EVO a significant improvement over the original model. Although they haven't been very detailed about the upgrades, we should trust GR's claims, and we know all the specifications will come into play when the car makes its racing debut.
