Anyone who loves to hit the canyons on a weekend before heading to their local cars and coffee typically knows that a more controlled environment to release their need for speed would be much safer. But track days—and especially track cars—can feel excessively expensive. Buying a dedicated toy with racing and celebrity provenance might provide at least some hope of recouping losses at the end of the day, so this 1987 Oldsmobile Delta 88 NASCAR currently listed on the auction website AutoHunter and formerly driven by Lake Speed might be the best bet to add savvy financial planning to what would otherwise be a hard-to-justify purchase.

Of course, even back in the 1980s calling a Nascar a specific model like the Delta 88 remained a stretch. This car actually rides on a 1981 Hutcherson Pagan chassis and received a steel Olds body on its 110-inch wheelbase complete with a smoothed aero nose, plexiglass windows, and what looks like an elementary school science project rear spoiler bolted onto the trunk lid.

Under the hood, though, Lake Speed got to unleash the power of a Chevy small-block, in current guise having been built by Motor Masters of Hartford, Wisconsin, and pumping out 650 horses. The build includes dry-sump oiling to maintain pressure during the high g-force cornering of big superspeedways and routes grunt to the rear wheels through the Jerico four-speed stick shift and a quick-change rear differential. Other mechanical goodies include Wilwood disc brakes all around with six-piston calipers in the front and four-pots at the rear.

Two Seats To Scare Passengers

The interior features two seats, a detachable steering wheel, and readouts for engine RPM, oil pressure, fuel level, coolant temp, and more within an all-aluminum vertical dash plate. Power steering comes equipped, as does a fire-suppression system, a full roll cage, and harnesses for both the driver and passenger. Videos from a pervious owner racing the car at Road America in September of this year made it onto the auction page, while a model car kit, logbook, and a copy of the car's letter of authenticity will go to the winner bidder. With six days remaining until the final gavel, expect this 1987 Nascar to climb a fair amount above the current high bid of $7,600.
