Walter Rohrl is a German ex-rally and racing champ with dozens of wins under his belt for Porsche, Ford, Opel, Fiat, and others. Despite his retirement, he continues to support the sport making frequent appearances for automakers and on TV. He recently turned up on the Youtube series "Porsche Top 5" discussing some of his favorite rally cars. Let's take a look at some of his top picks.

The 911 Paris-Dakar rally car is perhaps one of the most iconic rally cars in Porsche's lineup and the forebear of the famous, and victorious, 959 Paris-Dakar car as well. The 953 series car raced in the 1984 Paris-Dakar rally with a pre-959 four wheel drivetrain installed. Drivers Rene Metge and Dominique LeMoyne won the rally with the car coming to be know as the 911 4x4.

Rohrl is quite familiar with this next car as he piloted the 924 Carrera GTS in the 1981 German Rally Championship. With its gold paintwork, bulbous fenders, and slick handling, and put together in a breakneck 8 weeks, Rohrl took several stages, and the overall victory cementing his legacy as one of the world's top rally drivers.

911 GT3 (996)

And lastly is the 911 GT3 (996), a car which hardly needs an introduction. While this car first appeared long after Rohrl barnstormed around the world's rally tracks, it's cut quite an impressive path as the most recent of Porsche's successful rally cars. With its distinctive Zebra stripes, updated drivetrain, and deep bench of Porsche factory drivers, the GT3 is quite popular on the German rally scene. The particular car is driven by married couple Ruben and Petra Zeltner. It appears that the couple that races together, stays together. Buckle up.
