Ram has unveiled their new EcoDiesel engine for the 1500 pickup with a bunch of torque and class-leading towing.

All the major truck brands are going diesel. Chevrolet recently announced their turbodiesel will arrive with the 2020 Silverado, and now it’s Ram’s turns to bring their own 3.0-L EcoDiesel V6 for the redesigned 2020 Ram 1500.

And it’s a very impressive engine. Power is 8% more than the previous-gen and torque is up 14%. That’s 260 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque, which beats the F-150’s 250 horsepower and 440 lb-ft. It also beats the Silverado’s turbodiesel, which will arrive with 277 hp and 460 lb-ft.

Best of all, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will have class-leading towing at 12,560 lbs.

“The new Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is America’s most powerful half-ton diesel pickup, following up on Ram’s Heavy Duty torque leadership and achieving what no other manufacturer has, with up to 480 lb.-ft. of torque in a 3.0-liter engine,” said Ram brand head Reid Bigland. “The all-new EcoDiesel engine and our eTorque mild-hybrid powertrain technologies deliver the highest available fuel efficiency for our Ram 1500 customers.”

Getting the most out of the new EcoDiesel involved a bunch of tweaks for their 3rd-gen engine, including a brand new water-cooled variable geometry turbocharger and redesigned high-pressure direct-injection fuel injectors. The aluminum pistons were completely redesigned, and connecting rods and crankshaft are made of forged steel for extra durability.

Unlike Chevy or Ford, Ram’s turbodiesel engine will be offered on every trim and configuration, making this the most customizable diesel pickup available. It’ll even come on the brand new Ram Rebel off-road trim to take on the Silverado’s Trail Boss diesel.

Ram EcoDiesel availability begins in late 2019 with pricing to come at a later date. We’re expecting great things considering you can grab the EcoDiesel on a lowly Work Truck and still have more than enough torque to tow the moon.
