The first seriously quick Japanese car was probably the Nissan Skyline, the turbocharged 6-cylinder coupe perfectly balanced power against handling. The all-wheel-drive supercar killer proving to be much faster than its power output suggested, clearly Japanese carmakers had caught up with, and overtaken Western brands. The Lexus RC F has been rejuvenated for the Track Edition, the most notable being the car's revised aerodynamic package, other chassis and transmission overhauls have made the coupe a better driver's car. The same 5-liter V8 engine now produces 472hp, a minor boost that improves the time from 0-60mph to 4-seconds.

9 Nissan R390 - 0-60 In 3.9-Seconds

Homologation cars gave owners the chance to own a piece of racing history, the R390 was another in a line of prototypes of Group C cars that manufacturers have developed for use on the road. Nissan at least had the sense to use a detuned version of their race car engine producing 550hp, even so, the R390 can still achieve 60mph in 3.9-seconds.

Starting with 19 low-mileage late-model R34s, Nismo engineers stripped and rebuilt each car by hand, strengthening the chassis but leaving the bodywork unchanged. The finished results speak for themselves, launching to 60mph in 3.8 seconds.

6 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X FQ440 MR - 0-60 In 3.8-Seconds

Everyone knows Mitsubishi's Evo range of high-performance sedans, the ultimate model aimed at the UK market bearing the FQ-440 name and the last model built. As its name suggests, the FQ-440 boasts 440hp thanks to a 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, only the Koenigsegg Jesko produces more power per liter.

The FQ-440, like all Evos, is not perfect and suffers from turbo-lag, however, keeping the engine within its optimal speed range will deliver a supercar slaying 0-60mph time of 3.8-seconds.

5 Lexus LFA - 0-60 In 3.7-Seconds

Lexus, a brand normally associated with luxury cars unveiled the LF-A in 2010, a front-engine supercar that could equal its Italian rivals for a fraction of the cost. Power comes from Yamaha's 4.8-liter V10 which sends 553hp to the rear wheels, launch control helping to achieve a 0-60mph time of 3.7-seconds.

Altogether, Lexus has built 500 LF-A's, including a limited series of special edition cars equipped with the optional Nürburgring performance package.

3 Yamaha OX99-11 - 0-60 In 3.2-Seconds

Yamaha's first foray into the world of supercars led to the OX99-11, the Japanese industrial giant intended the car to be a showpiece for their F1 involvement. The initial troubled design and development phases would result in Ypsilon Technology taking over the entire project to produce the revised tandem two-seater configuration, the subsidiary later produced three prototypes.

On paper, the OX99-11 had everything it needed to be a great supercar. Yamaha's 3.5-liter V12 engine initially developed for Formula 1 is better suited to road use rather than competition use. Designed by engine specialist Zakspeed, the OX99 produced 400hp in a chassis that weighed 2500lbs, the Yamaha supercar took 3.2 seconds to reach 60mph.

2 Acura NSX - 0-60 In 2.7-Seconds

Acura announced plans to produce a new NSX as far back as 2011, the prototype model took another four years before being unveiled to the press. Early performance concerns quickly fell by the wayside with official figures proving the new car was considerably quicker than its predecessor, it only took 2.7-seconds to accelerate to 60mph.
