This particular Type 59 was originally assembled over several years by expert restorer Ray Jones. It is on a Type 59 frame, and it is in the style of the 59/50S raced by Robert Benoist in the 1935 Grand Prix de l’Automobile Club de France.

The car was originally completed in the early 1990s and the build of this machine amazingly included the installation of the supercharged 4,972 cc inline-eight engine that was in the original Benoist car of the 1935 Grand Prix. During the build of the car, reproduction aluminum coachwork was all built up for the chassis.

In its stunning Bugatti blue, this car looks absolutely sensational. And even more remarkable is the fact that the white number 24, seen on the tail, hood and grille, is hand painted. This is also depicted in photos of the original Benoist car. The Type 59 was originally debuted back in 1933, and replaced the Type 1954 in anticipation of a rule change stipulating a 1,653 lb weight limit for the upcoming season. Only eight examples of the car were originally made, and upgrades saw the car form the basis of the Bugatti Type 59/50B racers.

A Period Cockpit For Racing

The cockpit represents the original period of the car as closely as is possible in 2022. There is naturally a single seat, situated on the right-hand side, and there is a wood rimmed steering wheel frame for the driver to grip. There is also a single windshield, faired rearview mirror and a handbrake lever on the driver's left.

The T50S inline-eight engine is allegedly distinguishable from other period engines thanks to its lightweight aluminum sheet-metal crankcase, with a larger supercharger mounted midway along the side of the engine. The fact this engine powered the original Benoist car makes it even more special.
