Tesla is one of those newer automotive companies that have been disrupting the century-old industry with their innovation with electric vehicles. While there are a ton of reasons that Tesla is a company that needs to be given the chance, today we are going to go over why Tesla as an automotive manufacturer won't be a smart purchase for quite some time.

Innovation is one of the things that the company might have gotten right, but as a whole, the world is still stuck on the traditional combustion engine, which doesn't seem to be slowing down in terms of production through some of the most known brands in the world.

Fortunately, those like Tesla are taking the helm and innovating while most of the others haven't. Being that Tesla still is a young company started just before 2010, there is a large area of improvement that needs to be had before there will be more widespread Tesla vehicles taking over the roads around the world.

Here are 17 of the reasons why Tesla won't be a good purchase for quite a few years to come, later we will also go into five of the things that Tesla got right when it comes to their vehicles.

22 Price

Via Evobsession

This is one of the main concerns for many buyers in the market, the price tag of the Tesla vehicles.

Think about the average consumer, most people in the market are looking to purchase a vehicle in the $20,000 to $30,000 range, where a Tesla is starting at $60,000 and up, with some such as the P100D reaching close to $100,000. Tesla has hit the mark on many things, but for the average consumer, this isn't cost effective quite yet.

21 Reliance on Software

Via Teslarati

Software is one of those things that has started taking over the world as of late. Tesla being an electric vehicle has a huge reliance on software versus having hardware style things like most production cars have.

Being that it so heavily relied on software, there are many flaws that require addressing as they happen. With that comes many different challenges that the company and the consumer faces while owning a Tesla vehicle. Many times they aren't fully addressed until it is too late.

20 Prone to Recalls

Via Market Watch

Tying back to the reliance on software, we are facing many different recalls with Tesla. Most of these tend to happen in scenarios such as crashes, where you have to go into the dealer to get a new program uploaded into the car. This gives us a big dilemma when things like the car locking when it is crashed, or systems taking over.

While yes they are still a newer manufacturer, consumers want something they can rely on for years to come, versus having to always find a dealer.

19 Got Right - Elon Musk

Via CNBC

While there is a lot of controversy around Elon Musk, as the Tesla founder and President, he is the perfect fit for the job.

This has been his brainchild for many years, plus he is one of the most brilliant and innovative people on earth. Not only has he began revolutionizing the automotive industry and renewable energy, but the space program as well. There isn't really any limit to what Elon Musk can do, because he naturally solves problems.

18 Charging

Via Twitter

An ongoing gripe about Tesla and other electric vehicles will continue to be the issue of charging. Where you might think of it as you have to fill up a gasoline car anyway but charging it is something that you might not realize is an issue until you are out and about.

Range is something we will talk about later, charging will continue to be an issue until there are widespread ways to quickly charge your EV without having to change your entire plan of driving.

17 Lack of Service Options

Via Qualtrics

Now here is one thing that is likely to continue to deter buyers for years to come. Think about this, how easy is it to find a mechanic to work on your current car? Pretty easy right?

Tesla has worked to provide the only service option for their vehicles in-house at the dealerships. While this might seem safe, because they are certified, it isn't the most convenient option when it comes to routine maintenance. You want to be able to head down the street and find your mechanic, versus sometimes driving hundreds of miles.

16 Very Few Dealerships

Via Barrons

Continuing on with the lack of dealerships. When you want to service your car, like what was stated above, you have to go to a Tesla dealership.

For most cities, there isn't a Tesla dealership anywhere near. Usually, you can find them in the major metropolitan areas in each state, but what if you live hours away from the nearest? This adds to a bit of an inconvenience to owning a Tesla in general, as you always want to be able to service your car close to home. Plus, what if you wanted to buy another Tesla? Get ready to take a drive.

15 Got Right - The Tesla Semi Truck

Via CBS

One of the best things that Tesla has done to date is develop a semi truck. Especially in the US, you might see the roads riddled with diesel trucks, which send clouds of black smoke into the atmosphere.

While these trucks are necessary, they are hurting the environment more and more. Tesla has started to revolutionize this industry creating the Tesla semi-truck, which is 100% electrically powered, and environmentally friendly. Not only can they haul the same, but they are clean powered vehicles.

14 Lack of Driver Engagement

Via AutoExpress

With the advance in technology that Tesla has shown especially with the newer models they have produced, you find less and less driver engagement in your driving experience.

Yes, autopilot mode might be something super cool, but it takes away from the experience of being one on the road, and more importantly, being in control of your car. This actually turns out to be one of the most dangerous things as well, since there are a ton of bells and whistles to distract you in the cabin. On the roads today, we all have to rid ourselves of these distractions and be engaged with the car, for safety reasons.

13 Few Model Options

Via Clean Technica

Tesla as a whole has very few model options for consumers to choose when taking that step to purchase a vehicle.

Mostly what they specialize in is a mid-sized sedan, which is targeted at a certain audience. You have the Model S, Model 3, Model X and the Roadster (Which is still a concept). The average consumer has been going either with a larger vehicle in a 3rd-row style SUV, a truck or even a smaller sedan. Having few options doesn't allow the majority of consumers to have a wide selection for something that fits their needs.

12 More Cost Effective Options

via wired.com

In the EV department, there have been quite a few more companies jumping on the wagon when it comes to making more energy efficient vehicles.

Companies like Chevrolet, Nissan, Toyota, and even Audi have begun production on cars that are more cost-effective than a Tesla. Where these companies still are working to innovate the electric vehicle market, they are offering these cars at a much smaller price tag and beginning to draw in more consumers to their products.

11 Got Right - New Technology and Innovation

Via EVannex

As a company, Tesla is known for having some of the coolest and advanced technology in the automotive industry. Not only have they revolutionized the electric vehicle market, but they have also raised the bar and continue to do so.

Adding some of the most advanced systems into their cars, as well as others that are simply convenient for the customer and owner of the vehicles. Tesla has definitely created new standards when it comes to technology in any type of car.

10 Crash Issues

Via Teslarati

Tesla is known for making some of the most innovative cars on the market, however, there have been quite a few incidents where either fire, faulty behaving software, and various other problems have happened due to crashes in the cars.

While there is a widespread problem with car crashes in the first place, one of the biggest things that the company has boasted about is their safety, which might have great crash test ratings, but the volatility of the batteries is still in the works.

9 Range

Via Teslarati

While Tesla has boasted about having superior range to any other EV on the market, that is also something that is to be desired. Keep in mind these cars are generally starting at around $60,000, and the range might be slightly better than some of the competition.

With a solid range of around 300 miles or so, this leaves something to be desired, as even some hybrids that are on the market are hitting 500+ mile ranges. This still isn't bad for an EV, but when heading on a long trip, it can be tricky.

8 Charging Time

Via Reuters

Charging time is another big thing to be desired from the Tesla and all-electric vehicles in general. From a standard charger you are looking at 6 to 8 hours of charging time to fill.

Take into consideration how long it takes to refill your gas tank in a traditional car. That is a bit skewed, right? Now Tesla has introduced the "Super Chargers" which increase charging time significantly. However, these are very scarcely available. You might find a "Super Charging Station" but again those are few and far between, just like other chargers for your Tesla as well.

7 Got Right - Instant Power

Via Motor1

By far one of the biggest advantages of having an electric vehicle is the ability to have instant power when you press your foot on the gas pedal.

This gives cars like the P100D extreme acceleration, and it is all instantaneous. Other combustion vehicles have to rely on injectors, timing, and forced induction to be really fast, which they are when they get going. But all-wheel drive, paired with instant power gives the Tesla a huge advantage on the road, even when getting on the highway. Top end power is still to be desired, but for the moment, these are still extremely quick vehicles.

6 Prone to Hacking

Via Wired

This is something that has been recently discovered, the Tesla is also prone to hacking, like many other software systems that are connected to the network.

While this hasn't been a widespread problem that Tesla owners and Tesla as a company have experienced, there are a few instances around the world that have made it known that Tesla rides are vulnerable. Now, this isn't saying that every Tesla will get hacked, but that is something to be aware of as we move forward to the future of the automotive industry.

5 Taking Road Trips

Via SFGate

As mentioned above, range and charging are an overall issue for the Tesla vehicles in general. This goes along with taking a road trip (yes, they are still popular). If you are traveling with your Tesla to another state, for instance, you have to plan very carefully.

You can't just map out which roads you are taking with GPS like you normally would, you have to have it mapped with chargers. Sometimes this will take you far outside of your path, and the trip will almost always be longer than normal.

4 Lack of Sports Cars

Via Motoring Research

Now, this might seem like an argument that is very small, but with any company generally, you want to be able to offer a sports car, or performance model in order to showcase what you are capable of.

Sure the P100D is fast, and the Roadster is getting there; however being able to actually compete in circuits, and be in the conversation when it comes to sports cars is essential for brand image. If you think about it, nearly every automotive brand in the world offers multiple performance cars/models/trims. Tesla should be innovating in this sense as well.

3 Lack of Aftermarket Options

Via Unplugged Performance

If you are like me, you love being able to customize your car no matter what make or model it is. Tesla is in that phase where there are very few if any companies that are jumping onto this wagon of modifying their cars.

Not only are you limited for your service options, but being able to do even cosmetic upgrades is a difficult feat for any Tesla model. While this might not be a deal breaker for most, it is unlikely that many companies will start producing parts for Tesla models in the aftermarket sense.
