We mostly remember Top Gun for Tom Cruise, a bit of Val Kilmer, lots of fighter jet action, and a Porsche. It was a 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa, owned by Tom Cruise, but shown to be his lady love’s car in the movie.
And now, 36 years later, the movie is back, as Top Gun: Maverick, and Cruise is back as Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. So is Porsche. And we have a need, a need for speed.
Porsche Is Back With 'Top Gun'
Top Gun was a huge hit in 1986, and who does not remember the scene in which Charlie, as in Kelly McGillis, zips through in a black Porsche as Cruise watches, slack-jawed. Porsche just released its new commercial at the Super Bowl, and it’s thrillingly, achingly familiar because it runs to the Top Gun theme song.
The caption says it all, “Porsche and Top Gun, together again” and it’s exciting to watch the Porsche zipping it on the road, as much as it is to see the jets take to the sky, breaking the sound barrier. You can see plenty of Tom Cruise in the commercial, back in action as Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, doing his stuff on the road and in the sky.
Porsche Looks Cool With Cruise And Wins
One Instagram user commented on the ad that Porsche posted, writing, “And of course, Maverick wore a Porsche Design Chronograph 1.”
The movie is set more than 30 years later, and Maverick is now training Top Gun graduates. Here, he encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller) who has the call sign “Rooster” and is the son of Maverick’s late friend, Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick “Goose” Bradshaw.
While the movie aimed to be out in 2019, pandemic delays pushed the date back to May 27, 2022, and fans eagerly await the same. Meanwhile, Porsche is celebrating another win. The TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E team won the Mexican Grand Prix. Porsche wrote on its Instagram, “Pascal Wehrlein brought an intense race to a victorious close, crossing the line in P1 to bring home the first-ever win for the team in the championship. Right behind him was teammate Andre Lotterer resulting in a double Porsche victory” — proving that Porsche is the right ride for Maverick in Top Gun: Maverick.
Who will be cruising in a Porsche in the movie? And which of the Porsche models will find itself lucky enough to be Cruise’s car? Guess we’ll have to watch the movie for more, and we can’t wait.
