Richard Rawlings of Gas Monkey Garage is one of the most charismatic automotive YouTubers on the planet. He and the Gas Monkey Garage team are highly renowned for creating some epic builds with some amazing cars, and he and the guys often go around the USA hunting classic cars to bring home and restore to sell on. With more room in Rawlings garage after his recent Bring a Trailer sale, some of these cars may end up a part of his own collection.

This latest video from Gas Monkey Garage features a car Rawlings has had his eye on for a while. Rawlings is heading up to Oklahoma to go and have a look at something that he has been working on for some time, and something that some people might have seen in one of the past episodes on the Gas Monkey Garage YouTube channel. This is a rare MOPAR, a Plymouth Superbird, that Rawlings has wanted for some time and after some back and forth, he finally has a deal, and he is able to grab this car and bring it back to Gas Monkey Garage.

Arriving In Oklahoma To Check Out This Rare Machine

Rawlings has brought plenty of money with him to try and get this car home. These are the guys at Red Dirt Mopars, and they were on a previous episode on the channel of Mopars and Jaguars. It looks like the guys at Red Dirt are doing a lot of working and moving a few things around, although there are a few gems in the garage that Rawlings gets to see such as a big blower Hemi Plymouth Barracuda. While this is one stunning looking car, it isn’t what Rawlings has come to see.

We finally get to see the “rarest bird in the south” a little later in the video. It is a 1970 Plymouth Superbird, bucket-seat, four-speed, pistol grip 440 machine, something that Rawlings has always wanted. It is a proven, driven, built machine. The Red Dirt Mopar guys have a half-a-million Dodge Daytona in their collection too, so Rawlings is hoping he can get his hands on this epic Superbird. In its stunning white, this car looks amazing, and a lot of it is also original too. A number in the trunk matches the VIN on the dashboard, on the door sticker and more.

Rawlings has a look around the car and checks it out, and asks what the team did to it. There was no real restoration on the car, with it mostly cleaned out and having its motor put in. The transmission is the original, numbers-matching transmission making it quite the purchase for Rawlings. These cars of course were famous for their exploits in NASCAR and they are some of the most beautiful looking performance cars of their time with that big rear wing at the back.

Rawlings loves the horn on the car too, and is simply in awe of everything about the car. He hears how the Superbird has an air extractor to bring the air out from underneath the car, a novel feature from the racing days of these machines. The rear wings on the car can handle up to 1,000 lbs of downforce, and the Goodyear tires on the Superbird add to the cool factor of this pretty epic machine. We can see in Rawlings expressions just how much he loves this car and how keen he is to finally have one in his collection.

Rawlings gets a run out in the Superbird, and we are also treated to a few shots of the MOPAR classic out on the move. A few burnouts that allow the engine of this MOPAR classic to roar get Rawlings very happy indeed. As the guys from Red Dirt have said, this is a Superbird that really loves to party and inside it is just as immaculate as the outside. With all that said and done, it is time for Rawlings to finalize that deal and bring this machine home.

Red Dirt say that this machine drives even better than the Daytona in their garage. After his drive out, it's time for Rawlings to bring this baby home with him. Rawlings knows he needs this car, and he can have some Richard Petty vibes down in Dallas. When it comes to the deal of the day, Red Dirt offer the car for $200,000 which was the number Rawlings had in mind! With that done, Rawlings shakes on the deal, and he is the proud owner of one truly special MOPAR machine. We can’t help but be crazy jealous of him, taking home an iconic machine.
