Watch this crazy Frenchmen get into his bathing suit and take his convertible Smart car through an automatic car wash. This isn’t just any Smart car: it’s the Smart Crossblade. Which is probably a name you’ve never even heard of--that’s because they only ever made 2,000 of these tiny convertibles, and none of them ever made it over to the United States. As you can clearly see, the Crossblade has been extensively modified from the Smart Fortwo Cabrio that it was originally. The doors have been removed in favor of a pair of “safety bars” that don’t seem all that safe. The windshield has been replaced by something that seems more at home on a motorcycle than a car. There’s also no roof. It’s about as close to a Mercedes beach buggy as you can get. But it’s not just some bizarre cosmetic changes that happened here. German tuner company Brabus got their hands on the tiny 599 cc engine and pumped it up to 70 hp from its former 61 ponies. To combat the possibility of rain ruining the upholstery, they gave the Crossblade a waterproof interior that makes up for the fact the interior is actually the exterior. It can even go through a carwash without issue. It was never intended to still have occupants when it does, though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjoGu090PaM French automotive, model, and lifestyle photographer Calvin Courjon apparently lost a bet and had to drive himself through an automatic car wash in the Crossblade and tape the whole event for posterity. Apparently, being beaten by a rotating brush wasn’t really all that bad, but being mostly naked in a carwash was very cold. Of course, car wash soap is intended to be removed from metal panels and not from delicate human skin. To get rid of the soapy residue, our intrepid heroes had to go to another, less-automatic car wash to rinse of the remaining wax and soap. Don’t try this at home, kids.
