For the last few weeks, reports have been circulating that the famous SRT division, part of the Fiat Chrysler and wider Stellantis stable, was to be disbanded. The brand started out as team Viper in 1989 and has morphed through various guises to become SRT in 2002, the name that's featured on cars such as the Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat and Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye. Now, those rumors have been put to bed as Stellantis confirmed that this has taken place with the SRT performance engineering team being incorporated into the wider engineering division of the company.

No Official Confirmation, But A Dilution Of SRT Is Clear

Mopar Insiders have reported on the matter and they reached out to Stellantis for an answer as to what was going on with the brand. They then confirmed that the SRT team has "been integrated into our company’s global engineering organization.” Strictly speaking, this is not official confirmation that SRT is gone. But reading between the lines it is clear that what the team did has simply been amalgamated into the wider Stellantis structure, which is a sad day for fans of their vehicles and the company in general.

Stellantis continued by saying, “This action will have the two-way benefit of ensuring that our brands’ SRT and performance-focused product offerings continue to meet the highest quality standards and expectations while delivering key learnings from motorsports and other high-performance-technology applications across a wider mix of our company’s product lines.” While this is sad news, it is not totally the end of the SRT division.

SRT Experience Will Be Used In Further Stellantis Projects

Their expertise will still be utilized as they will be tasked with working with performance engineers from the PSA side of Stellantis, and thus they will still have the chance to work on high-performance machines no matter what badge is on the car. Mopar Insiders said the writing has been on the wall for some time, with Jeep continuing to use their Trackhawk name.

The SRT name should still appear on vehicles such as those from the Dodge side of the group, but as its own individual organization, it is now more and is diluted among the Stellantis group. It will be an SRT in name only. No doubt the role of electrification has played some part in this problem.
