Roush Performance is a popular name in the aftermarket space. Much like Shelby American, Roush is no stranger to the Mustang audience, offering various upgrades and bolt-on packages. Although Roush specializes in performance parts and crate engines for the Mustang, the company also modifies F-150s with suspension overhauls and high-performance engine maps.

Over the years, Roush Performance established itself as a well-known Ford aftermarket tuner with a complete range of in-house developed vehicle packages and engineering solutions. The company’s most recent product offering is a 750 hp Supercharging Kit available for the 2022-2023 Ford Mustang GT.

What makes the Supercharging Kit unique is its ability to transform your regular GT into a Shelby-slaying muscle car. You can even thrash the all-new 2024 Mustang Dark Horse without exercising the limits of this supercharged 5.0 V8.

It’s not cheap, though. Retail price for the Roush 750 hp Supercharging Kit is $8,799. But look at it this way. Bolting the kit on a brand-new 2023 Mustang GT is still cheaper than buying the less-powerful 2024 Dark Horse. If you like that idea, let’s not waste any time and get into the specifics.

Roush claims the 2022-2023 Supercharging Kit unlocks 750 horsepower and 670 lb-ft of torque. That means the Roush Supercharger adds an impressive 300 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque over the stock 5.0L V8 engine. But it wasn't an easy exercise. The engineering team carried out extensive tweaks in the form of improved thermal management and reliability. As part of the kit, you get Roush’s High-Capacity Cooling Technology with a full-face low-temperature radiator. This larger low-temperature radiator provides increased cooling capability, allowing greater power output without compromising performance.

But of course, the highlight of this kit is the Eaton TVS R2650 supercharging unit. Employing this supercharger allows for increased power output throughout the RPM band. Not only that, but Roush also went with bigger bearings and timing gears for extra durability. The best part is that the system meets the Tier 3 Emissions Standards. Roush also highlights that Mustangs with both manual and automatic transmissions are compatible. Although the Supercharger Kit's calibration is optimized for 93-octane fuel, it also works with premium unleaded.

It’s worth pointing out that the kit is not a plug-and-play item and requires some serious engineering expertise and 16 hours of labor. However, if you are familiar with engines and don’t mind working on your car, all you need is the instruction manual and a bunch of garage tools. But keep in mind Roush is pretty specific about the warranty. The 3-year/36,000-mile Limited Powertrain Warranty will only apply when the kit is installed by an ASE-certified technician.

Why The Roush-Tuned Mustang Is Illegal In California

Even though the 750 hp Roush Supercharging Kit meets the Tier 3 Emissions Standards, the unit is not approved for sale in California or states that require an EO number. If you’re not familiar with this, EO stands for Executive Order. Every EO part or modification has an assigned number that can be verified by Smog Check stations or the CARB. If there is no EO number, the performance upgrade part is not California emissions legal.

There are other caveats too. Roush says the Supercharging Kit is not compatible with Ford Mustang 5.0L engines equipped to meet Euro 6.2 emission standards. Euro 6.2 uses particulate filters. But this Roush Supercharger system is not optimized for that. Also, certain Mustang models are excluded from the compatibility list. The Supercharger Kit is not designed for the Mach 1, Bullitt, or the GT350.

We know that the seventh-gen 2024 Mustang GT still has the V8 engine. In its standard guise, the engine puts out 480 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque (486 hp/418 lb-ft with the optional performance exhaust). On the top-spec Dark Horse, the engine is tweaked to produce 500 horsepower and 418 lb-ft.

It’s evident that a Roush-supercharged Mustang is far more powerful. But it makes even more sense once you factor in the costs. A brand new 2024 Mustang Dark Horse costs $57,970 before markups. You can buy a new 2023 Mustang GT for as low as $38,345. Add $9k to that, and you now have a 750-horsepower beast for just under $50,000.

Sure, it may not have the latest infotainment system, but if you’re looking for raw power, the Roush Supercharging Kit is your best bet at leveling the mighty 2022 Shelby GT500. All while costing significantly less. You can also spruce up the GT’s handling characteristics by browsing through Roush’s extensive aftermarket library.
