Marshall Mathers, better known to his fans and his detractors as Eminem, is one of the most successful rappers of all time. His 2000 recording, The Marshall Mathers LP, sold 10.6 million copies, making it the second biggest-selling rap and hip hop album, behind Speakerboxx/The Love Below by Outkast. Meanwhile, his 2010 collaboration with Rihanna, Love the Way You Lie, is the third biggest-selling rap and hip hop single in the history of the UK charts.
Eminem has even won an Oscar, picking up the award for Best Original Song for Lose Yourself from the 2002 semi-autobiographical movie 8 Mile. And yet despite all this success, the rap star announced in 2007 that he was taking a break from music, and didn’t release any new material until his 2009 album, followed by the critically acclaimed Recovery.
The rapper has always enjoyed performing live, from his early days of rap battles in Detroit hip hop bars to sold-out stadium tours around the world. His 2014 Monster tour, which was co-headlined with Rihanna, may have only taken in three cities, but it still managed to gross $36 million, making it one of the most successful tours of the year.
Touring can be stressful for everyone involved, which is why Eminem’s entourage know that there are some rules they have to obey if they want to keep the rapper happy while he’s on the road.
19 Rule - No Cursing
Despite the profusion of profanities in his songs, it seems that away from the recording studio and the stage, Eminem prefers to keep things clean. When he was bringing up his three children, his daughter Hailie and his two adopted daughters Alaina and Whitney, the rapper banned cursing at home, and it became a habit that was hard to break.
While his daughters are young ladies now and don’t need so much protection from bad language, the no swearing rule seems to have stuck, and Eminem prefers not to hear too many curse words from his entourage when he’s on tour.
18 Rule - Supply Him With Comic Books
And how does the world’s most famous rapper keep himself entertained on long journeys around the globe? He reads comic books, of course. In fact, comic books and graphic novels are pretty much the only books that Eminem ever reads, and has even admitted that the only “ordinary” book he has ever read from start to finish was LL Cool J’s autobiography, I Make My Own Rules.
Eminem is such a legendary fan of comic books that Marvel even created a graphic novel that saw Slim team up with The Punisher in a special one-off publication back in 2009.
17 Rule - Stay Sober
Fans of Eminem might expect that his tours would be pretty wild affairs, and while that may have been true back in the day, these days the rap star is more likely to have an early night than party the night away.
It is well known that Eminem has had problems with substance abuse in the past, but he has made a concerted effort to get clean and to stay clean, with help from an unexpected source – singer Sir Elton John. Because of his problems in the past, there is zero tolerance for anyone caught on an Eminem tour with anything that they shouldn’t have.
16 Rule - Provide Fast Food Meals
Despite the fact that Eminem is now a multi-millionaire many times over, he hasn’t forgotten where he came from, and all that money hasn’t really changed the way he lives his life. While he may be able to afford to eat at the finest restaurants in the world wherever he travels, the rapper actually prefers to eat cheap and cheerful but not-so-healthy fast food meals from some of his favorite restaurants, especially McDonalds’s, Denny’s and Taco Bell.
Eminem put on a lot of weight as a result of his poor diet but managed to shed those extra pounds after he came out of rehab.
15 Rule - Keep His Agent Happy
In fact, when it comes to Team Eminem, there is only one person who has a more volatile temperament than the star himself, and that is his agent, Cara Lewis. If you want to keep your place on an Eminem tour, then you have to stay on her good side – and according to stories from the history of rap and hip hop, that isn’t always the easiest thing to do!
Lewis has been described as the “most feared woman in music” - a tough cookie who always did anything and everything for her clients, even if that did mean that she made some enemies along the way.
14 Rule - Don't Stare!
Eminem has a very recognizable sense of style, which usually incorporates a baseball cap pulled low over his eyes or a hoodie with the hood pulled up – or sometimes even both.
Yes, this may be part of his bad boy image, but there is also a practical reason for him to hide away from the world. There is nothing the rap star hates more than having fans staring at him while he is out and about, so his outfits are the perfect way to move around without attracting unwanted attention. It is also the job of the Eminem entourage to keep him away from the prying eyes of members of the public.
13 Rule - Security Has To Be Tight
One of Eminem’s biggest hits, Stan, may have been about the perils of dealing with a persistent fan, but it seems that life sometimes imitates art, as the rapper himself has had a few unexpected and unpleasant encounters with admirers.
Because of that, he likes to keep security tight when he is out and about, especially when he is traveling abroad. Although he isn’t the kind of celebrity who travels everywhere with a bodyguard, security is still a key concern for Eminem and his entourage when it comes to touring – so that he doesn’t end up with a real life Stan!
12 Rule - Private Jets Only
There aren’t many celebrities of Eminem’s standing who still fly on scheduled airlines alongside members of the public – even first class tickets aren’t exclusive enough for someone who likes their privacy as much as Marshall Mathers does. While Eminem doesn’t own his own private jet, unlike many of his rapping colleagues, he does use private planes to make most of his long-distance journeys across the States and around the world.
He has even sent private jets to pick up other performers when he wants them to join him on stage, as he did with Bebe Rexha when they were on stage together at Coachella in 2018.
11 Rule - Meet His Rider Demands
Since the earliest days of rock ‘n’ roll, musicians have imposed lists of demands on venues where they are going to perform. These demands, which are known as riders, usually involve specific food and drinks, although it does seem that the more famous the singer, the more outrageous the demands.
No-one would ever consider Eminem to be a diva – or at least they wouldn’t say it to his face – and yet has made some peculiar demands when it comes to his tour riders over the years. He has even asked for a pond full of koi carp to be made available to him when he was performing at a festival in Ireland.
10 Car - Aston Martin V8 Vantage
However, Eminem isn’t always on tour, and when he is back at home in his Michigan mansion he has plenty of amazing cars in his garage to get him around. The rap star owns an Aston Martin V8 Vantage, a hand-built sports car which was designed by automotive legend Henrik Fisker, and assembled at one of the British company’s UK factories.
The V8 Vantage was built between 2005 and 2017, while there is a more powerful V12 model available too. With a top speed of 175mph, this is a sports car which manages to effortlessly combine great design and impressive performance.
9 Car - Ferrari 430 Scuderia
Despite coming from Michigan, where the US motoring industry was born, Eminem does seem to have an appreciation for some of the best Europe-made sports cars and supercars on the market. Another highlight of his collection is a Ferrari 430 Scuderia, a special edition of the regular Ferrari 430 two-door sports car which was launched in 2007.
Formula One champion Michael Schumacher had been involved in the design of the vehicle, and he got to unveil the Scuderia at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. The Scuderia is lighter and more powerful than the regular Ferrari 430, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 60mph in just 3.6 seconds.
8 Car - Porsche Carrera GT
From an Italian car designed by a German Grand Prix driver to a classic roadster that has been one of Germany’s most successful automotive exports. Porsche is a well-known name among gearheads, and car enthusiast Eminem is clearly no exception.
The Porsche Carrera GT is almost universally loved, and even finished in a respectable eighth position in a recent poll by magazine Sports Car International to find the best sports car of all time! Only 1,270 models were made between 2003 and 2007, making the Porsche Carrera GT something of a collector’s edition as well as a great car to drive.
7 Car - Chrysler 300C
Not all of the rapper’s cars hail from Europe, however. He also owns several vehicles made by US companies, most of which have their roots in Michigan, and the area around Detroit where Marshall Mathers was raised, even if they have now expanded to factories around the globe.
One of his US automobiles is a Chrysler 300C, a top-of-the-line, full-size luxury car with a V8 engine, which can run on just four cylinders if the driver wants to be more fuel efficient. In production since 2004, no Chrysler 300C models were made in the States, and were instead built at factories in Canada, Austria, and China.
6 Car - Cadillac Escalade
Cadillac is another classic name when it comes to the US automotive industry, although the Escalade is a relatively new kid on the block. This luxury full-size SUV is a favorite vehicle among Hollywood actors, sports stars and chart-topping musicians, and it appears that Eminem is no exception!
In production since 1998, the Escalade is Cadillac’s largest passenger vehicle and boasts a luxurious interior that is more reminiscent of European carmakers like Mercedes-Benz and BMW. The top-of-the-line platinum model will set you back at least $100,000, and that’s before you even add on any of the extras which are available to Escalade customers.
5 Car - Lamborghini Aventador
Back to Italy now for the next impressive vehicle in Eminem’s extensive and eclectic car collection. Lamborghini is up there with Ferrari when it comes to the best-known names among supercar fans, and the Aventador is one of the stars of the Lamborghini stable. This two-door mid-engine sports car has an impressive V12 engine, which powers the Aventador from 0 to 60mph in less than three seconds, with a top speed of over 217mph.
A car like that doesn’t come cheap, however, and even the most basic Lamborghini Aventador models are going to set you back $350,000. Luckily Eminem has an estimated net worth of $190 million, so that is well within his price range.
4 Car - McLaren MP4-12C
McLaren is better known as a Formula One team, winning 12 Drivers’ Championships and 182 individual Grand Prix races since they made their debut in 1966.
However, the company has also used the technology they have developed for their Formula One cars to create production sports cars, which they sell for outrageous amounts of money to the rich and famous – including Eminem, who owns a McLaren MP4-12C. Built between 2011 and 2014, the McLaren MP4-12C was the company’s first production car since they stopped making the McLaren F1 sports car in 1998. Only 4000 of these cars were made, making the McLaren MP4-12C as exclusive as it is stylish.
3 Car - Audi R8 Spyder
Audi has a reputation for making luxury executive cars, but the company has made a few forays into the world super-expensive supercars. One of its biggest successes was the Audi R8 Spyder, one of the cars in Eminem’s garage at his Michigan mansion. The Audi R8 Spyder is a convertible, unlike the standard Audi R8 coupe, and also boasts a more powerful engine.
First built in 2006, the Audi R8 was based on a concept car which was the star of Audi’s exhibition stand at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show, and the top-of-the-line model which Eminem drives will have set him back at least $177,000.
2 Car - Hummer H2
Not all of Marshall Mathers’ cars are sleek and sophisticated sports cars though; the rap star also owns one of the roughest and toughest production cars ever made – a supersize SUV that was based on a military personnel carrier. The Hummer was a big success in the 1990s, and though it is being relaunched for the 21st century as a hybrid, Eminem still owns one of the old school, gas-guzzling SUVs.
His Hummer is one of the H2 models, a second generation vehicle which was a slimmed-down version of the original Hummer H1, which was itself based on the Humvee.
1 Car - Ford GT
When it comes to US car companies, there is one that has had a long connection with Eminem’s home city of Detroit, Michigan than most, and that is Ford. So it is hardly surprising that Mathers, who is very proud of his roots, would have at least one Ford car in his garage; a Ford GT.
The Ford GT is an all-US supercar, first made between 2004 and 2006 and then relaunched in 2016. With its powerful supercharged V8 engine, the Ford GT has a top speed of 216mph but if you want to copy Eminem’s style and get one for yourself, you’ll have to be prepared to pay at least $450,000!
