As electric cars started to populate the automotive market at a faster rate, the primary concern of prospective buyers was (and still is) safety. While the greener, more sustainable future may seem attractive, EVs are yet to prove their reliability, especially as they carry novel technology that is easy to get suspicious about. It doesn't help that we know more than one EV that caught fire.

But the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the renowned vehicle-safety evaluator, shared evidence of electric vehicles becoming as safe as conventional ones. In fact, an insurance data analysis suggests that injury claims happen less frequently for EVs.

This is all data from two years ago. In 2022 and 2023, the IIHS awarded a significant number of EVs with its prestigious Top Safety Pick awards. The winners went through rigorous crash tests (just like their ICE counterparts) and proved safe in a full-frontal collision, various overlap collisions, and other trials standard for the IIHS.

Today, we list these safest electric cars with the best crash test ratings for 2022 and 2023.

A big Tesla competitor with much more exciting styling, we dare say, the 2023 Mustang Mach-E proves excellent in crash tests. Although, we have to notice the + from the IIHS' Top Safety Pick is lacking. This is due to the left rear passenger door opening during the side crash. The other two issues concern child seat anchors and headlights.

The NHTSA also gives the 2023 Mustang Mach-E all five stars for side crash and rollover, while it's yet to test the frontal crash.

The 2023 Genesis Electrified G80 is a gorgeous all-electric sedan with a punchy powertrain and various comfort amenities. The IIHS gave it a Top Safety Pick+ award for 2022, with the sedan getting the highest grades for most crash tests. The only areas where the G80 got Acceptable and Marginal rates are the seat belt reminders and child seat anchors, which are too deep in the seats and require force to attach.

The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a much-talked-about EV that deserves every bit of attention it has collected. This vehicle comes with unique styling, a fun powertrain, fast charging, and much more. The IIHS gives it a Top Safety Pick+ award for 2022, although the structure and safety cage only got an Acceptable grade. Seat belt reminders, headlights, and child seat anchors also got less-than-perfect grades.

One thing to note here is that NHTSA gives the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq a five-star safety rating, but it also reports the EV having holes in the side of the front airbag after frontal crash tests.

Now, to the safest cars of 2023 in the EV segment. You may get surprised, but the new Subaru Solterra proves good at most crash tests. The IIHS gives it the 2023 Top Safety Pick+ award, rating it with the Good green grade across most segments. However, we should highlight three areas where this EV got one lower rating.

According to IIHS, the 2023 Subaru Solterra had an issue with the frontal airbag not keeping the dummy's head fully secured and protected during the crash. The leg/foot injury area could also get exposed, and rear passenger head protection is lacking for the side impact.

2 2023 Tesla Model Y

Another Tesla on our list that gets the 2023 Top Safety Pick+ title is the Model Y. This EV scored excellent in most crash tests, earning Acceptable ratings only in headlight (not on all trims) and LATCH (ease of use) segments.

Although it has not rated the newest iteration of this highly sought-after EV, the NHTSA gave all the top safety ratings for previous production years of the Model Y.

Finally, one of the safest EVs you can get in 2023 is the Volkswagen ID.4. IIHS gives this attractive and exciting ride a Top Safety Pick+ award for this year, rating it excellent across all areas except for headlights. Another thing to note is that the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 has advanced instead of superior front crash prevention (vehicle-to-pedestrian; day and night) rating.

The NHTSA also gives the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 top safety ratings from crash test results, although it strips a star for rollover ratings.
