Mention LeBron James these days and his name is as synonymous with luxury cars as it is with basketball. LeBron's recently been signed to pitch electric GMC Hummers while the NBA legend owns such classy wheels as Ferraris and Porsches. It was in a Porsche that the slam-dunker was seen on Monday cruising on a Los Angeles freeway, more specifically behind the wheel of a 918 Spyder.

Superstar Athlete In A Supercar

His appearance was documented on Instagram by @e30alex99, which after only a couple of days online garnered more than 150,000 likes from those who like to gawk at superstar athletes in supercars. Even while wearing a mask, presumably to ward off any pandemic threat (although physical distancing was not an issue in this case), the source of the video seemed to have no problem recognizing the Lakers legend.

Reactions from viewers were largely positive, ranging from "Awesome" to "Legendary car for legendary player." That said, the occasional wag couldn't resist taking a poke at the athlete with such humorous reactions as "Maybe it was a loaner when his Kia was in the shop."

Still, one can't argue with LeBron's choice of wheels, especially a convertible to enjoy a sunny day in Los Angeles. For openers, his 918 Spyder has got power via a 4.6-liter V8 engine capable of cranking 599 horsepower and a top speed of 211 miles per hour. As a hybrid, the combined horsepower with its electric motors jumps to 881 horsepower.

James' Porsche also has one cushy interior with a touchscreen that stretches across the dash offering such options as cabin comfort to the latest in infotainment. It's also got a nifty array of handling amenities, many of which can be controlled from the steering wheel.

That LeBron offered a polite wave before zooming past the videographer seemed to come across as a classy gesture as most luxury car owners try to avoid any eye contact with minions driving anything made in Detroit. And given that the Lakers won the league championship this year, maybe this was the dribbler's way of doing more victory laps.
