For the first time, a robotic car will drive up the Goodwood Festival of Speed hillclimb course.

Goodwood will be host to a few autonomous cars this year. There’s a 1965 Ford Mustang that’s been outfitted with a bunch of sensors that will trundle its way up the hill every day, and after a few initial runs it's apparently having a difficult time.

Engineers still aren't quite sure what is going wrong, but it might have something to do with the fact that the Mustang uses a pre-scanned map of the course and then tries to compare that model to its onboard suite of sensors to see where exactly it is. The Mustang shows a disturbing tendency to veer off into the hay bails, which the car would do multiple times if the driver doesn't grab the wheel.

But that’s not the only robotic car to be at Goodwood. There’s another robocar--appropriately called Robocar--which will take on the hillclimb without any human intervention whatsoever.

Robocar does things differently than the ill-fated Mustang. Rather than rely on a pre-programmed map of the course, Robocar relies on a much more sophisticated suite if sensors and artificial intelligence to learn the course and then apply that knowledge to achieve faster speeds.

On the outside, Robocar is covered in sensors including lidar, radar, ultrasonic, regular cameras, and a GPS. On the inside is Nvidia’s Drive PX 2 computer which churns through all the data provided by the sensors to learn the track. After a few test runs, Robocar learns the track and tries to beat its own lap time--just like a human would.

Four electric motors provide a combined 500 horsepower. There’s not much else to describe since there’s not much else to the car. It’s the first fully robotic car to climb Goodwood, something that the race’s founder is quite excited about.
