When it comes to American muscle cars with high horsepower numbers, the Street Speed 717 YouTube channel is one of the best in terms of content. Recently, he purchased an amazing orange Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 with a claimed 1,000 hp.

To test this claim, a recent video showed the popular YouTuber dyno testing the new Shelby purchase. While it made an impressive 930 hp, Mike (Street Speed 717) thought it has more performance than what the dyno indicated.

In his newest episode, Mike meets up with the previous owner of the GT500. With some help from the past owner, the car is now faster than his 1,000-hp Chevrolet Corvette ZR1.

The Shelby Mustang GT500's Previous Owner

The video starts off with Mike recording a phone conversation with the previous owner of the "Tang Stang" as he called it. He goes off a list of all the modifications to the car which include a ported blower, 2.5 pulley, cold air intake, lethal race pipes, upgrade fuel injectors, throttle body, and a custom dyno tune. The Shelby did have Nitrous on it but he decided to take it off.

The conversation continues and they are both amazed that with only a handful of mods, these cars can make 930 hp to the wheels. After some more discussions about how to make even more power, Mike asked the previous owner if he wants to drive it to which he replies "Are you serious?!"

After picking up the Mustang's previous owner from the airport in Mike's "slow" Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, they arrive at the house to look at the GT500.

After appreciating his previous car, he gets behind the wheel for some pulls. Mike then states "it always feels faster in the passenger seat". After changing the spark plugs, Mike thinks the GT500 can make well north of 1,000 hp to the wheels.

To put it to the test, they decide to do a race against Mike's Corvette ZR1. The first race shows the GT500 losing traction by spinning its wheels in 2nd gear with the Corvette getting ahead. The next race faired even worse for the Mustang as it almost lost control of the car. Mike states this is due to the shot tires in the Shelby.

The 3rd race starts from a 60 mph roll and the Mustang takes off ahead of the Corvette. Mike states he was going full throttle in the Corvette and wasn't able to catch up, showing that the Mustang is now indeed faster. With some better tires, the Mustang should be able to manage the traction issues at lower speeds. Mike plans on adding a Whipple supercharger to the GT500 in the near future. With those mods, there should be no question about who is faster.
