Check out this Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 take on a Dodge Challenger Scat Pack in a quarter-mile drag race.

Normally we see the Dodge Challenger R/T 392 Scat Pack take on the Mustang GT where things are a little more even in the power department. A GT would have a 5.0-L V8 with 435 hp and 400 lb-ft, which is a little closer to the Challenger’s 485 hp and 476 lb-ft from its 6.4-L HEMI V8.

But this isn’t a GT--It’s a Shelby GT500. Under the hood is a 5.8-L supercharged V8 with 662 hp and 631 lb-ft of torque. Zero to sixty is done in just 3.5 seconds on its way to a top speed of 202 mph.

It should be noted that zero to sixty time assumes an experienced driver behind the wheel controlling the 6-speed manual. With human error involved, those performance numbers can suffer mightily in the hands on an inexperienced racer.

The Dodge Challenger, on the other hand, has an 8-speed automatic transmission handling the gear shifts so the driver just has to keep their foot on the throttle and their hands on the wheel. Zero to sixty for the R/T Scat Pack is done in 4.3 seconds with a top speed of 182 mph.

Additionally, the Challenger weighs roughly 700 lbs more than the Mustang since it’s a big freakin’ Dodge. Mustangs have always been on the lithe side in comparison to their Dodge rivals.

On paper, the Mustang is the clear favorite. But in a race, anything can happen.

Perhaps the Mustang driver was inexperienced, or maybe it was dealing with some sort of mechanical issue. All we know is that the GT500 certainly didn’t exhibit greater acceleration than the Challenger as both cars have somewhat slow starts. Then the Challenger pulls ahead and maintains that lead all the way to the finish line.

The Mustang finished in 13.44 seconds at 108.61 mph, while the R/T Scat Pack finished in 13 dead at 115.00 mph. That’s quite the upset for the Mustang and a sign that maybe a manual transmission isn’t for everyone.
