Everybody is quite familiar with the hot-rod scene. First introduced in the 1930s, the cars were pretty much equipped with more race-friendly performance parts, including a much more powerful powerplant. In the last couple of years, the trend caught some steam thanks to the restomod scene.

Amateur and professional petrol heads worldwide have looked for ways to increase a given car's power. The following swaps are among the sickest engine swaps gearheads have ever seen. The trend has expanded to about each and every vehicle ever made. Engine swaps are no longer reserved to classic cars, even modern sports cars are getting their powerplants replaced.

10 BMW Z4

BMW has come up with some of the nicest sports cars on the market. From the E30 M3 to the outstanding, yet underrated i8, BMW has always been at the forefront of innovation. While the company has been among the leading carmakers, it was once threatened by a company that did not seem like anything serious.

There are several things you may have just learned about BMW's Z-Series in the last couple of weeks, such as the fact that the Z-Series was principally created in order to compete with the Mazda Miata MX-5. This particular Z4 saw its engine replaced by an 8.3L V10 from a Viper SRT-10. That is 600 hp in a tiny sports car.

9 Ford Mustang

The fifth-generation Mustang is basically the Mustang that revived the nameplate. The previous generation was extremely dull. That being said, the fifth-generation is far from being the most powerful car out there. Thankfully, the Mustang can accommodate a plethora of other engines.

Imagine having the possibility to purchase a V12-powered Mustang. That would have been the ultimate Mustang. It would have probably been the base for the Mustang GT500. As Dodge is creating increasingly powerful vehicles, and Chevrolet is beefing up its Corvette, it may be time for Ford to finally release a special edition that produces over 850 hp. The V12 found on this Mustang was sourced from a 2001 Aston Martin Vanquish. 600 hp is a good start.

8 Porsche 911

One of the most legendary German-made sports cars is of course the Porsche 911. Similar to the Corvette, the 911 is one notch above other German cars. It is a quick vehicle that includes all the bells and whistles somebody with a really fat wallet would go for.

This is the sort of Porsche that was modified to the next level. This Honda-powered Porsche 911 is a real beast, even with a Honda powerplant. The turbocharged and intercooled K20A2 engine really screams, which is an indicator that it produces a respectable amount of power.

7 Mercedes-Benz 190

Mercedes-Benz is a great car manufacturer. However, in comparison to BMW and Audi cars, Mercedes-Benz vehicles earned the reputation of being wealthy and old people cars. Though most Mercedes cars are equipped with satisfying engines, they failed to release cars as popular as the M5 during the 1990s and early 2000s.

This Mercedes-Benz 190 is not your average 190. It sure is not the lukewarm sedan you may have inherited from your well-off uncle. This skilled car fan decided to work with Maxxtuning (a Sweden-based company) to fit a 350 ci V8 coupled with two Holset HX50 turbochargers. This mean 190 can produce up to 1,347 hp at the wheels.

6 Lamborghini Diablo

Lamborghini has released some insane vehicles after the Lamborghini Miura P400 SVJ Spider. Starting with the Countach, Lamborghini created one of the most iconic supercars of the 1970s. In the early '90s, Lamborghini replaced its legendary Countach with the Diablo. The rest is history.

The Lamborghini Diablo was the craziest car of the 1990s. However, someone decided to turn this truly iconic Italian supercar into a American-Italian. Under the hood of this 1995 Diablo sits a Corvette LS3 engine. Do not worry. This Diablo was badly damaged which encouraged the new owner to make some serious modifications.

5 Subaru Impreza

Subaru became very popular among younger gearheads when the first Impreza WRX was released in the early 90s. However, Subaru had released other vehicles in the domestic market before the Impreza was created. The Subaru Brat is the perfect example. Today, older Subarus are among the best project cars.

This French Subaru Impreza saw its boxer engine replaced by a TFSI inline-five, commonly found in newer Audis. The engine was modded to allegedly produce 500 hp, which just as powerful as the MTM-tuned Audi RS3. The car does look like a 22B, but rest assured these awesome mechanics only built a replica.

4 Volkswagen Golf GTI

To most car fans, the Volkswagen Golf is not a sports car. Its more energetic editions, such as the R32, are the only ones that can earn the sports car status. The 2004 Golf R32 packs a 3.2L V6 that produces 240 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. This is insane for a Volkswagen car.

The Volkswagen Golf MK4 GTI is not the most powerful German car on the market. However, this Golf is fitted with a highly modified twin-turbocharged 5.2L Lamborghini V10 that pumps out 1,479 hp and 1,298 lb-ft of torque. This Golf is basically a really fun coffin on wheels.

3 Ford Mustang

In the last 10 years, the restomod trend became very popular. In its infancy, the movement was quite subtle. However, in the last two years or so, several companies have decided to go all out. Restomod projects, American or not, are a dime a dozen. It is now quite common to stumble upon a classic pro-touring style Mustang.

This is far from being another Coyote-swapped Mustang. This particular '68 Mustang is fitted with the same 4.3L V8 found in the Ferrari 430. The V8 is equipped with two turbochargers from Nelson Racing, a company that's well-known for coming up with the best packages for very high-end powerplants.

2 Ferrari 458

The Ferrari 458 is a tremendous vehicle. It is a Ferrari after all. The car was designed by Donato Coco and Pininfarina. Though the supercar was discontinued in 2015, it remained one of the greatest Ferraris ever made. This particular 458 must be one of the coolest 458s out there.

This very special Ferrari 458 was built with a specific purpose in mind: to test the LaFerrari engine. The original 4.5L V8 that produces 562 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque was replaced with a 6.3L V12 that churns out 789 hp and 520 lb-ft of torque. That is one special Ferrari 458 you may never get to see on the road.

1 Porsche Boxster

The Porsche Boxster is a very controversial vehicle. To most sports car fans, the Boxster is Porsche's worst modern vehicle. However, it has been said that the Boxster helped the company get back on its feet. Though the Boxster is nothing like a GT2 RS, it can become a very enjoyable machine.

This Porsche Boxster got its average powerplant swapped for a much more potent unit. Pop the hood and you will find a 2.1L Audi inline-four that makes 550 hp and 425 lb-ft of torque. This is what Porsche should have done to its Boxster in the first place. If you happen to be the owner of a Boxster, maybe it is time to get in touch with Motor Werks Racing.
