Sports cars and supercars usually aren't within reach of the average person thanks to budgetary limitations. It's not only the initial price of purchase, but also the maintenance costs, especially for cars that need replacement parts every 5,000 miles or so. Not to mention fuel consumption, which can be downright outrageous. No wonder people are looking at EV conversions for their classic sports cars these days.

Luckily, gearheads can always turn to the used car market in order to satisfy their need for speed. Thanks to depreciation, it's now possible to find some absolute bargains, whether it's a high-end sports car, grand tourer, or actual supercar. There are a number of well-known high-performance brands that dip below the $50,000 mark and some can even be had for as low as $10,000. But buyer beware, always proceed with caution and exercise due diligence when inspecting the car, whether it's for everyday use or special occasions.

When first released, many purists considered the Boxster as a poor man's alternative to the Porsche 911. However, the Boxster 3.2 soon found a devoted fan base and the mid-engined platform proved to be a very entertaining, well-built, precision tool for those looking to buy an awesome sports car without spending 911 money.

The Porsche Boxster S has a smooth-revving 3.2-liter flat-six boxer engine that produces a respectable 276hp, that's enough to propel it to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. Thanks to its mid-engine configuration, it also has balanced handling and delivers precise driver feedback that even some newer performance cars will struggle to match, no wonder Magnus Walker claims it's the "best first Porsche".

Via caranddriver

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage is a car with an appealing presence. Designed by the legendary Henrik Fisker to compete with trendsetting supercars like the Porsche Carrera, this Aston Martin has acquired a personality of its own. It is both powerful and elegant without sacrificing the thrill of neck-breaking speed.

Better still, you can drive around town or take to work. This is because while there is no supercar that can be genuinely be described as cheap to own, the Aston Martin is one of the few that allows practicality when it comes to ownership with affordable maintenance and few glitch issues that come with some exotic cars. While you can find an Aston Martin Vantage for as low as $30,000, working with newer models from 2008 upwards at a cost of $35,000 -$65,000 will offer you better value for your money

Bold and breathtaking are the hallmarks of all the Dodge Viper models. A powerful V10 engine is under the hood while its muscle car heritage shows in it's handling. Its wild nature and little pretentiousness towards luxury have built a legendary reputation.

For just under $50,000 you have several options through three generations. From the classics of the 1990s to a couple of contemporary 2000s models, you have your pick if you are looking to own a supercar. A word of caution though, Dodge Vipers hardly have the numerous security features of most supercar models, so you are better off with at least the second generation which has anti-lock breaks and the third generation does better in terms of more comfort.

Rear visibility is a bit limited and the car may feel heavy, and the operations can also appear a bit complex. However, for $32,000 you get a performance car that holds its own against competitors and sets you apart from the crowd.

Via motortrend.com

During its launch in 2007, the Maserati GranTurismo seemed to be the car the car that would finally rival the Porsche 911. It actually managed this for a while before it was beset with several recalls. These largely had to do with electronics, the transmission and gearbox. However, with consistent updates and modifications, there is plenty to admire about the Maserati GranTurismo.

Its exterior beauty is matched by the luxurious interior and even though early models lacked Bluetooth transmission, it is easily the roomiest four-seater supercar. Two adults can comfortably occupy the back seat and it is also great to drive over long distances. There are a number of models offered for just $40,000, with the average mileage being 50,000 miles. You will want to watch out for the tires though since they may need replacement every 12,000 miles or so.

2 Aston Martin DB9 ($25,500)

Via gyscars.com

The Aston Martin DB9 is a gorgeous and powerful car and it was the car that brought Aston Martin into the current century and the closest thing to a totally new Aston Martin in many years.

Despite the success of the DB7, this was the car that was credited with keeping the brand in the business. Having had 13 years in production, it means there are so many choices to pick from. Look for cars in the $30,000 to $40,000 brackets as these will have less mileage and better specs, which will help you with the resale value and maintenance costs. Avoid the $27,000 and below options as they could end up as burdens instead of bargains. Similarly, avoid DB9s used as rental cars since they are usually worn out.

1 Ferrari Mondial ($24,900)

coys.co.uk

The Ferrari Mondial is not a car that wows you with the Ferrari image at first look or even the first drive. The figures are also not that great even for an 80s supercar. However, the Ferrari Mondial was designed as a family supercar from its 2+2 seats, the room and even handling. Doing 0-60 in 8 seconds and having 214 bhp may not have inspired many but it had a number of firsts for Ferrari when it launched, including being the first Ferrari to use power steering and fuel injection.

Better still, you can go for the Mondial T model that has more power, 300 bhp, and shaves the 0-60 speed by 2 seconds. For as little as $25k you can get a Mondial with only 30,000 miles on it, making it the cheapest Ferrari in the world.
