There are primarily two types of upgrades people make to their cars: performance upgrades to boost speed or aesthetic upgrades to make it turn heads. Then there are upgrades that do both. Widening a car makes it perform better and look prettier. There are several advantages to widening a vehicle. First, a widebody kit can transform a car into a stunner, especially when done by a true pro.
A wider car also tends to handle much better thanks to improved aerodynamics and grip. Over the years, there have been several extreme widebody kits that have left motoring enthusiasts salivating. The following are ten of the best.
10 Liberty Walk Ferrari 458
The Ferrari 458 might already be one of the greatest Ferraris ever, but Liberty Walk made it even better with this widebody kit, which is signed by Liberty Walk's founder, Wataru Kato. This is the first Liberty Walk Ferrari 458 widebody put together in the US and, judging by the reception, it won't be the last.
The Ferrari's naturally-aspirated 4.7-liter V8 now pumps out 585 horsepower instead of the factory version's 562 horsepower. The car is then equipped with Accuair suspension—hence the impractical ride height when stationary.
9 HKS Toyota Supra
The Toyota Supra is among the best Japanese cars of all time, loved by many for its powerful stock engine, reliability, and ease of modification. Ever since drifting culture started picking up during the ‘70s in Japan, HKS has been working on drift cars, many of which have been Toyota Supras.
HKS has grown so much that it now has a US division that's also producing gems. One of the best kits built by HKS USA is the Toyota Supra widebody kit. This kit stretches the Supra's width by 8 inches and adds a custom duck spoiler and an enormous wing on the back.
8 Supervettes C6 Corvette GT6X Extreme Widebody
For the last couple of decades, Florida-based Supervettes has been building a range of performance modifications and widebody kits specifically for Corvette enthusiasts. One of the company's greatest creations has to be the GT6X Extreme Widebody Kit that extends the C6 Corvette by 2.5 inches on each side.
The kit includes everything from custom vents to a new hood and a new spoiler. For an extra sum, Supervettes can make the kit in carbon fiber to cut down weight and boost performance. Buyers can also have the kit fitted along with a supercharger, new brakes, new suspension, exhaust, and even an audio system.
7 Prior Design McLaren 720S
Compared to the iconic P1, the McLaren 720S looks a little tame and 'ordinary' to some people, which is why Prior Design decided to build this crazy widebody kit for it. The kit features an all-new vented front hood, massive fender flares made of carbon fiber, and a wild diffuser that will require careful car parking techniques.
The kit also comes with a massive yet underplayed rear wing that looks cool from all angles and creates some much-needed downforce at high speeds.
6 Audi Q8 Widebody Aero Kit By Prior Design
Another fantastic creation by Prior Design, this Widebody Aero Kit is designed to make the Audi Q8 much more aggressive than it already is. The kit is made from a glass fiber-Dura-Flex mixture that offers sufficient flexibility and an excellent surface structure that allows for easy and inexpensive painting.
The widebody kit comes with a front lip spoiler, front fenders, and rear fenders. Buyers can also opt for a rear diffuser, a rear trunk hatch spoiler, a rear roof spoiler, and a four-piece front bumper LED light kit to complete the look.
5 FAB Design Mercedes-Benz SLS Gullstream Coupe
The Mercedes-Benz SLS already produces a thunderous roar that can rival any muscle car out there, so Switzerland-based FAB Design decided to give it a more muscular look using a widebody kit. The kit features re-sculpted fenders with side skirts and quarter panels, making up an entire panel that fits perfectly over the car's existing panels.
The car is equipped with a restyled bumper with wide quarter panels in the rear, giving it a more sinister look. Buyers can also opt for a non-functional air scoop.
4 Pogea Fiat 500 Abarth "Ares"
Looking at the five widebody Ares models built by Pogea Racing, it's hard to tell that they started out as Fiat 500 Abarths. The most notable feature about the Ares custom car is its carbon fiber widebody kit, which can be bought separately. The kit comes with new bumpers, fenders, roof spoiler, and hood to give the little hatchback an extra 1.9 inches of width.
Pogea Racing also tuned the Fiat 500 Abarth 1.4-liter turbocharged engine, boosting its output to 405 horsepower and 328 pound-feet of torque.
3 Novitec Ferrari 812 N-Largo
Novitec is known for its crazy modifications on supercars, and the Ferrari N-Largo is no different. Novitec's custom Ferrari 812 N-Largo is 5.5 inches wider at the rear and 2.8 inches wider at the front, all thanks to the Novitec widebody kit. The kit features all-new fenders with new air vents, a wider front bumper, and a new rear wing.
Novitec went a step further and equipped the N-Largo with new springs that lower it by 1.3 inches along with a hydraulic lift system. Novitec also tweaked the Ferrari's naturally-aspirated 6.5-liter V12, lifting its power output from 789 to 829 horsepower.
2 1016 Industries Lamborghini Urus
The popularity of SUVs has exploded in the US over the last two decades, which is why even Lamborghini felt that it had to make the Urus. The Lamborghini Urus is incredibly fast for an SUV, can go around corners better than most sports cars, and has an aggressive and sporty look to it that's hard to find in an SUV.
That's not quite enough for some people, however, which is why 1016 Industries has built this widebody kit. The kit includes a fender arch set, front aero lip, side skirts, a roof spoiler, trunk spoiler, and rear diffuser.
1 Artisan Spirits Black Label GT Lexus LC 500
The Lexus LC 500 is a stylish and athletic grand tourer, so giving it an aggressive widebody kit is not the first thing that comes to most people's minds. However, Tokyo-based Artisan Spirits built a widebody LC 500 that looks fantastic.
Built in celebration of the company's 20th anniversary, the Black Label GT LC 500 comes with carbon-reinforced plastic bodywork, an optional roll cage, and race seats for those wanting to hit the track. The car is also equipped with Brembo brakes and a KW suspension kit for added performance.
