The role of trucks in our society has changed drastically since the early 1900s. Then, trucks were more so utility vehicles. They were used for farm work as well as for all other duties that couldn’t be done with the use of a standard-size car. Now, trucks are used for practically all purposes. They are still used to haul heavy items, but people now drive them for fun instead of only for work.

Because of this, truck companies have diversified themselves a great deal. These new options have all the latest technology, most truck lineups have several electric options, and they are also much more approachable than trucks once were. Before many new drivers felt that driving a truck was too advanced for their road experience, now, many people get trucks as their very first vehicle.

Since trucks are such a large aspect of the vehicle market, we wanted to take a look at the current sales for 2022. Most names on this list will be expected because they are hallmarks of the truck industry, but some may come as a surprise.

Here are the three best-selling trucks of 2022, so far.

In thinking about trucks of all types, one of the most well-known and easily recognizable is the Ford F-Series, especially the F-150. This truck is a standard in the industry and is almost always a safe bet for both reliability and innovation. The 2022 models are no different. For this, we are looking at the Ford F-150 XL, which is the base model.

This 2022 Ford Truck is powered by a 3-liter Ti-VCT V6 engine. It produces a max horsepower of 290 at 6500 rpm and a torque of 265 lb-ft at 4000 rpm, according to the official Ford Website. This is a rear-wheel-drive vehicle and the transmission is an automatic 10-speed.

Buyers can also upgrade to either the 2.7-liter turbo engine or the 5-liter V8. According to most Ford truck fans, all are great options.

Fuel economy is also important when it comes to trucks due to their size as well as the always-changing gas prices. This one from Ford gets a combined 21 miles to the gallon. In the city, it averages 19 miles per gallon and on the highway, it’s 24. These are all pretty decent in terms of a vehicle this large.

Forbes reports that the Ford F-series has sold 140,701 units so far in 2022. While that number may sound great, that’s down 31.9 percent from the prior year. This is partly due to supply chain issues.

Like many new trucks, the options for the 2022 Ram 1500 are beyond plentiful. Some may say the amount is a bit overwhelming. Here, we are focusing on the Longhorn four-door crew cab. This bad boy is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 mid hybrid engine with a double overhead cam. It has a max power of 305 at 6,400 rpm and a torque of 269 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm, according to Edmunds.com.

In terms of fuel economy, it gets 19 miles per gallon in the city and 24 on the highway. This leads to a combined average of 21 miles per gallon. The tank holds 26 gallons of fuel and it uses regular unleaded.

When it comes to sales, the Ram moved 127,116 units so far this year. That may be less than the Ford F-150, but the Ram only decreased 15.7 percent from last year. It should be noted that sales of the Ram actually increased in 2021 while most brands experienced decreases. It even stole the number two spot from the Silverado.

The Silverado has been around for quite a long time. Like the F-150, this is one of the first trucks people consider because they are so widely used. The new models are excellent and do a great job of preserving the legacy of this iconic truck. This list will focus on the 2500 HD.

This truck has a 6.6-liter V8 engine under its hood, as well as an overhead cam. It produces a max horsepower of 401 at 5,200 rpm and a torque of 464 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm. This pairs with a 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission. According to Car and Driver, it gets 14 miles to the gallon on the highway.

So far, the Chevy Silverado has sold 118,796 units. This is down only 6 percent from last year.

Although the market has changed, trucks still aren’t for everyone. This is because while they offer everything a standard-size car does, many people don’t want to drive large vehicles. Again, this is often due to experience level, but it’s also simply a personal preference. Besides this, fuel economy is another factor. Most trucks use more fuel than other types of vehicles, so trucks are less appealing to much of the population.

Despite this, more and more people are going out and buying trucks. They have evolved a great deal over the years, but one thing is still true- a great truck goes a long way. This is why the same top three brands have occupied these spots for such a long time. People trust trucks made by Ford, Ram, and Chevy, and we don’t see that changing anytime soon.
