Porsche builds elegant and dynamic sports cars. The German sports carmaker seeks to design and engineer vehicles to satisfy its quest for performance on the road and on the track. Interestingly, Porsche has somehow designed a Taycan- and 911-based spaceship for the world of Star Wars.

This spaceship dubbed the Tri-Wing S-91x Pegasus Starfighter already made its TV debut in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Interestingly, since Porsche worked with Lucasfilm (part of Disney) for this new spaceship, the Tri-Wing has traces of the carmaker’s creations on it.

Spaceship Collaboration For The Star Wars Universe

Seven designers from Porsche and Lucasfilm worked in their respective studios to come up with the concept for the new fantasy starship as part of the promotion of a new Star Wars film. The designers only had two months to complete the project, but it was enough time for them to come up with a final design as well as a detailed Tri-Wing model that made its debut at the film premiere of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in December 2019.

Eventually, the Tri-Wing made its debut in the first episode of the 2022 limited TV series Obi-Wan Kenobi. In the TV series, Princess Leia Organa spotted a Tri-Wing leaving the city of Aldera on the planet of Alderaan, remarking "Ooh. A Tri-Wing. That's a new one."

Leia then talked to her L0-L59 droid (Lola) about the Tri-Wing, saying that an Aquillian Ranger was piloting it. Since Lola was skeptical, Leia changed her hypothesis, saying a trader could be piloting.

Borrowing Design Elements From Porsche Models

Designers of the Tri-Wing took design cues from Star Wars spaceships such as the X-wing starfighter, a BTL Y-wing starfighter, and a U-wing, as well as Porsche sports cars. Thus, Tri-Wing features several Porsche design elements, including a sloping roofline, strong bonnet topography, best width-to-height ratio, unique Porsche form, low nose with air intakes, as well as a strong emphasis on the shoulder and tapering greenhouse.

Moreover, the shape of the Tri-Wing canopy towards the rear is just like that of the Porsche 962, while the front window borrows that of the 917. Additionally, the Tri-Wing borrows the eight-lens headlight of Taycan as well as the four-point daytime running light typical of Porsche models. It also borrows the rear grid with the air opening and integrated third brake from the current 911 generation. Likewise, the Tri-Wing’s rear section dons the brand’s signature light bar.
