The second-generation Volkswagen Tiguan has been carrying the German automaker’s small SUV mantle for a few years now, and has garnered more than a few admirers in the process. A combination of handsome German looks, good fuel economy and some unexpected features such as 3rd row seating have helped its cause, and almost making up for its sub par acceleration, driving dynamics and resale value. But an all-new Tiguan is set to shake up VW's winning formula. Let's take a look.

We were therefore pleasantly surprised to see new spy photos of the upcoming 2021 Tiguan with hardly any camouflage, wearing even more svelte and handsome sheetmetal while being tested. The photos show the upcoming compact SUV with a revised front fascia and rear treatment as well as updated headlights and tail lights.

The design is more evolutionary and yet makes the Tiguan feel closer to and a viable alternative to its more upscale cousin, the Audi Q3. The interior of the new model will also benefit from an updated infotainment system including a more substantial display as well as the latest in electronic driver’s assist technology.

As for powertrain choices, the big news would have to do with the likely introduction of some form of electrification, likely in the form of a mild hybrid with a single electric motor working with a small displacement turbo which will also be used in the Golf. The good news here is that a performance-oriented R version will also be available, most likely carried over from the Golf R with its 2.0L turbo 4 cylinder delivering 296 hp. Coupled with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission and AWD, there will surely be some extra and welcome ooomph on tap for the new Tiguan.

Fitting the Bill

Although there is nothing earth-shattering about the new 2021 Tiguan, at least not at present, we can expect a feature-packed and distinctive looking German SUV that presents a practical alternative to the other offerings in this crowded segment. For many customers, that is exactly what the doctor ordered.
